TROUBLE IN THE HALL SCENE 1 Calvin, an eighth grader, and his friend Fatima are talking in the hall when Calvin sees another student, Jim talking to his girlfriend, Naomi. Jim is also an eighth grader and Calvin has seen him talking to Naomi before. Calvin is jealous and angry. He turns to Fatima.

O Calvin: Check it out. O Fatima: Where? What are you talking about? O Calvin: Jim and Naomi. O Fatima: What about Jim and Naomi? They’re just talking. People do that you know. I don’t see what the big deal is. O Calvin: The big deal is that he’s messing with my girlfriend. I see him talking to her all the time. O Fatima: I don’t know,Cal, maybe they’re just talking about school or something.

O Calvin: It doesn’t matter what they’re talking about. Look how close he’s standing to her. Man, he’s practically breathing down her neck. O Fatima: I guess they are standing pretty close. And she sure is laughing a lot. O Calvin: Jim has got to see me standing here. He’s doing this just to get to me. O Fatima: Well, maybe he doesn’t see you. O Calvin: Yeah, well I should go over there and kick his butt anyway. That guy’s got no right moving in on my girlfriend.

CONCLUSION O We experience and express conflicts in many ways. O Everyone has conflicts; people are not good or bad because they experience them. O Conflict is a part of life, and sometimes it is a necessary part of life. O The important issue is how you handle conflict. O If we resolve our conflicts by fighting, then conflict becomes something negative. O If we handle it in a positive way, then conflict can help us learn more about ourselves and others.

WHEN CONFLICTS BECOME FIGHTS

TROUBLE IN THE HALL SCENE 2 BACKGROUND: Calvin and Fatima were talking in the hall, when Calvin saw his girlfriend, Naomi, talking to Jim. Calvin suspected that Jim was trying to put the moves on his girlfriend. He became angry and jealous. THE SCENE: Calvin decides to confront Jim and Naomi.

O Calvin: That guy’s got no right moving in on my girlfriend. I’m going after him. O Fatima: Yeah,well, you better do something because he’s going to take your girlfriend away right in front of your face. Besides, all the other kids will think you’re a fool for letting Jim steal Naomi. [Calvin walks over to Jim and Naomi. Fatima follows] O Calvin:{Calvin pokes Jim on the shoulder.] Yo, man, what do you think you’re doing? You better me moving along. O Jim: Hey Calvin, don’t mess with me. I’m just standing here minding my own business, talking to Naomi. O Calvin: When you talk with Naomi, you’re in my business.

O Fatima: [Laughing] Ooh, you tell ’em, Calvin O Naomi: Why don’t you stay out of this, Fatima? O Calvin: I’ve seen you hanging around Naomi like some kind of dog. You’re always following her. You better not be moving in on my girlfriend. O Jim: So what if I am? What are you going to do to stop me? O Calvin: I don’t have to take this from you. O [Calvin pulls out a pocket knife and stabs Jim in the stomach.]

WHAT HAPPENED? O What caused the fight? O What body language was expressed and how? O How did the presence of weapons make things worse? O If the players had known Calvin had a knife, would they have acted differently? O How did the environment contribute to violence?

NEW ENDING Create a new ending to the story! Avoid conflict escalation and fighting! VIOLENCE PREVENTION IS EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY!

CONCLUSION O We can take certain steps to resolve our conflicts without fighting. O We know that fighting often leads to more violence.

CONCLUSION Many things affect our attitudes and beliefs- our families, friends, television, books, advertising, news coverage, and music. And what we believe affects what we do. If we hold hostile beliefs, such as “people are basically mean, then we are more likely to act in a hostile way. Therefore, it is important for us to think about our beliefs and try to understand where they come from and why they don’t always hold true.
