Do Now 1.Make a prediction about what this information is about. 2.What are you most excited about for summer?

Announcements Two days left of school for the year! Friday afternoon, we have our field day.

Agenda Creating a table Periodic table Practicing reading the table

Periodic tables of Kinex On your tables there is a bag with kinex in them. Your objective is to decide upon an organizing scheme for your kinex, draw a table, and then be able to defend to other groups why your ‘periodic table of kinex’ made sense to you.

Periodic table of kinex Tips: – Don’t put the pieces together. Each piece is to remain unattached to any other piece. – Consider unique shapes and sizes and figure out how you could organize this onto a table.

What is the periodic table? Table of elements ordered by atomic number (number of protons in each element) Ordered by chemical properties Divided into categories like metals and gases The first 92 elements are found in nature The rest were made by scientists in laboratories. These have some funny names. One element is named after Einstein

What are elements? An element is any material that cannot be broken down during a chemical reaction Simplest substance Examples: gold, silver, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon One atom only in that element. Ex. Lead (Pb) has one atom of lead in it

Atoms and the Periodic Table In each element block, there are 4 types of information: 1. Element name 2. Element Symbol 3. Atomic Number 4. Atomic Mass

Element Name & Symbol Name: What the element is called Symbol: Short, 1-2 letters, first letter is always capitalized. Q: What is the name of this element? Q: What is the symbol?

What is Atomic Number? The number of protons in the nucleus (the center) of an atom in an element Protons have a positive charge Hydrogen has an atomic number of 1 because there is 1 proton only in the atom’s nucleus

Periodic Table Boxes Atomic number is on top The symbol is in the middle. – Can be one capital letter like “O” for oxygen – Can be one capital letter and one lowercase like “Au” for gold Element name is below that

Atomic Mass Atomic Mass: The total mass of the element – Electrons are so small that the mass does not count: – Atomic mass= # protons + # neutrons Q: If Helium has the following atomic number and mass, what is the number of neutrons?

Practice! Find the following information for Nitrogen. Symbol = # Protons = # Electrons = # Neutrons =

How is the Periodic Table organized? Rows (across) are organized by atomic number Columns (down) are organized by chemical properties of the elements. – Each column of elements share things in common like: How they react to other substances Ability to rust or burn Magnetic or not

Superhero Pick an element from the table. You will create a superhero persona for this element. You will design a costume for the superhero. You’ll need to include a story about the element. – Include: who they are married to and their first born child’s name.
