What is copyright?  Copyright is protection given by law to authors or creators on anything that they create or make that they don’t want other people to steal or take.  It also gives the creator the opportunity to make money off their product and it prevent others from making money off someone else work. To Reproduce the work  This means to create the work over given the permission of the owner.  Ex. The movie Freddy Krueger made in 1984 and remade in Figueroa

To produce derivative works based on the work  This means to create something based off the original work.  Ex. When people write books or create movies based on a true story or true events. Figueroa

To distribute copies of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending  This means to make money from the work.  Ex. When Blockbuster sale movie or let people rent movies or when Books-a- million sale books. Figueroa

To perform the work publicly  This means to perform something that some one created in the publics eye.  Ex. A recording artist getting the permission from a producer to perform a song or songs that he/she has created. Figueroa

To display the copyrighted work publicly  This means showing the work in public,  Ex. Displaying someone else art work that he or she have created. Harris

In the case of sound recording, to perform the work publicly by means of digital transmission  This means playing a recording of some one perform someone else work  Ex. Listening to some one perform the poem “Still I rise” By Maya Angelou Harris

in the case of a “work of visual art” the author has certain rights of attribution and integrity in the case of a “work of visual art” the author has certain rights of attribution and integrity  This the means that the author of a work has the right to use his/ her name on his or her work and not let anyone use his or her name on something that looks like his or her work, but they did not create it.  Ex. Nikes that look like Air Force Ones but they are not. Harris

Right of paternity  “This right refers to the author's right to have his name on a work, to use a pseudonym, or to remain anonymous.”  This means an author can use his/her own name, they can use a fake name, or do note use a name at all. Harris

Literary Works  This includes works "expressed in words, numbers, or other verbal or numerical symbols" in "books, periodicals, [lectures,] manuscripts, phonorecords, film[s], tapes, disks, or cards." Figueroa

Musical Works  This includes sheet music, musical manuscripts, and any accompanying lyrics. Figueroa

Dramatic Works  Protection extends to literal copying and to copying of the work's expressive elements, character, action, and dialogue. Figueroa

Pantomimes" and Choreographic Works  As with dramatic works, protection extends not only to literal copying but also to copying of the work's expressive elements, character, action, and dialogue. Figueroa

Pictorial, Graphic, and Sculptural Works.  This "include[s] two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of fine, graphic, and applied art, photographs, prints and art reproductions, maps, globes, charts, diagrams, [and] models," among other items. Figueroa

Motion Pictures and Other Audiovisual Works  This includes "a series of related images" that "impart an [expression] of motion." (9) It also includes the sounds, such as sound tracks, that accompany the work. Johnson

Sound Recordings  Protection extends to any collection "of musical, spoken, or other sounds." (10) Because protection for sound recordings is separate from protection for the musical score, the copyright holder for the sound recording may not necessarily be (and often is not) the copyright holder for the musical score. Architectural Works  As of December 1, 1990, protection extends to "[t]he design of a building as embodied in any tangible medium," including buildings (such as houses, office buildings, churches, and gazebos), architectural plans, or drawings. An architectural work "includes the overall form as well as the arrangement and composition of spaces and elements in the design, but [it] does not include individual standard features." Johnson

Copyright infringement  When someone violates another person’s intellectual or creative property. Johnson

Reasons why people try to justify Copyright Infringement  People only download stuff that they otherwise would not buy, so a company's profits are not affected.  Downloading material allows people to "taste" something before they buy it. If they like it, they buy it; if they don't like it, they don't buy it and supposedly delete the downloaded item.  Downloading something allows people to boycott a product or person whom they disagree with. Ways to stop copyright infringement  Include a strongly worded copyright tag  Use a summary feed for your business blog  If you ‘must’ use a full text feed — copyright protect it! Harris

Include a strongly worded copyright tag  At the bottom of each of your original content posts/articles should include a brief copyright tag. this is your first line of defense. This will prevent all but the most unscrupulous of people from stealing your content. Harris
