Team Highlander Week 7 Presentation Ideation Initial CAD

Two Systems to Accomplish Goal Extendable handles that slide outward, allowing the user to press upward with their hands Kickstand-style stopper to counter the moment that results from the user pressing down upon the handles as he/she attempts to stand

Ideas for Extendable Handles Pulley System Spring System Magnet System Gravity-Assisted/Locked Extension System

Pulley System Extendable handles, on sliders, positioned horizontally To extend the handles: – User grabs the ends of each handle, presses a button on each to unlock them, and pulls them out until they pass a clipping pin, locking them in place User stands To close the handles: – User pulls levers on the top handles – Levers are attached to cables, which run around pulleys and are attached to the ends of the sliders – Lever pulls the handles in, locking them in place once they are retracted

Spring System Extendable handles, on sliders, angled 5-10° downwards To extend the handles: – User presses a button on each handle, releasing the handles from their closed position – Very lightly compressed spring at the internal end of the handle will allow the handles to “pop out” when unlocked – User pulls them out the rest of the way to a locked position (under tension) User stands To close the handles: – User presses buttons on the top handles to release the handles from the locked position – Handles, under tension from the spring, will close as they “spring” shut, overcoming the restoring force of the spring in the process

Magnet System Extendable handles, on sliders, angled 5-10° downwards. Magnets located at the internal end of the handle and at the end of the slider, separated by a bump stop. To extend the handles: – User presses a button to rotate the slider magnet 180°, making the magnets repel each other – User pulls them out until they reach a locked position User stands To close the handles: – User presses buttons on the top handles to release the handles from the locked position and flip the magnet a further 180° to provide attraction – Handles slide forward until they hit the bump stops, magnets within range of each other

Gravity Assisted/Locked Extension (Winner) Extendable handles, on sliders, angled 5-10° downwards To extend the handles: – User grabs the ends of each handle, presses a button on each to unlock them, and pulls them out until they pass a clipping pin, locking them in place User stands To close the handles: – User presses a button on the top handles of the device, releasing the locking pin and letting the decline return the handles to the closed position.

Stoppers Stopper is used to counter the moment generated by the user – Stopper is guided by a hole in the frame or a ring attached to the outside towards the edge of the walker on the user’s side, and as the end of the stopper reaches the ring or hole, it drops to the ground – The stopper would be attached to the arms and would be actuated as the arms themselves are pulled into their actuated position
