How Can I reduce My Carbon Footprint? By: Mike Bushee

What is a carbon footprint? A carbon footprint is the total set of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, event or product An individual, nation, or organization's carbon footprint can be measured by undertaking a GHG emissions assessment

What to do.. Reduce the Carbon Footprint of Your Car: Keep your car tuned up and running efficiently. Replace your air, oil and fuel filters according to schedule. Keep your tires properly inflated Studies have shown up to 30% of the difference in mpg is due to driving habits alone You could save more than a ton of CO 2 per year by: - Accelerating slowly and smoothly - Driving the speed limit - Maintaining a steady speed - Anticipating your stops and starts

A list of simple things you can do immediately: Turn off lights when not in use Turn down the central heating/air slightly Fill your dish washer and washing machine with a full load - this will save you water, electricity, and washing powder Do your weekly shopping in a single trip Don't buy bottled water if your tap water is safe to drink

What I Can Do: Install energy efficient light bulbs in my house in every room. Cut down the time on showers and all running water. Travel smarter, reduce my car trips and try to carpool a little more. Shut off lights when I leave a room instead of leaving it on. Recycle more paper and other recyclable material

Facts:

Continued… ENERGY STAR qualified bulbs use about 75 % less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer, saving you $100 or more per bulb. The average American throws out 86 pounds of clothing a year. US citizens average 4.5 lbs. of garbage a day. Recycle your paper, plastics, glass and metals to reduce waste.
