The Short Story

Elements of the Short Story  Plot:  Internal Conflict:  External Conflict:  Climax: What happens in a story The conflicts that happen within a character’s mind (ex: fear) The conflicts that a character faces that are physical (ex: a storm, illness) The point in a story where the excitement is at its peak. Occurs in the last third of a story.

Elements of the Short Story  Resolution:  Setting:  Motivation:  Theme: The end of the story, the conflicts are resolved Where and when the story takes place The forces that cause a character to take action The meaning or message of a story. (ex: Greed brings out the worst in people)

Elements of the Short Story  Mood:  Purpose: The atmosphere or emotional tone of a story The reason for why an author writes (to persuade, to inform, to entertain…)

Elements of the Short Story  First person Narrator:  Second person Narrator:  Third person, objective: objective: The narrator calls themselves “I” and we get an intimate understanding from within their head. Uses “you.” Not used often in stories, it leaves a foreboding feeling. Uses “he”, “she”, or “it.” Told from the perspective of a fly on the wall. No one’s thoughts are understood.

Elements of the Short Story  Third person, subjective: - - Limited: - - Limited: - - Omniscient: - - Omniscient:  Unreliable Narrator: “He”, “she”, “it.” But this time we can read the thoughts of at least one character. The narrator conveys the thoughts of just one character. The narrator conveys the thoughts of numerous or all characters. A narrator who either is not “in the know” or is deceiving the reader

Science Fiction Poem Guidelines  Takes place at least 50 years in the future. How you perceive the future is up to you!  16 lines minimum  Final draft will be on blank paper, NEAT (typed or handwritten), and have some sort of illustration (clipart or by hand)  Bonus points can be earned for rhyming or extra effort on the final version  DUE MONDAY

Elements of the Short Story  Symbol(ism):  Allegory:  Inference: When a literary element represents something else, often a well-known representation (ie: roses = love ) A narrative story in which characters and settings have a double meaning as an abstract idea or moral lesson The process of coming to a conclusion, not stated outright, just based on information learned.

Elements of the Short Story  Situational Irony:  Dramatic Irony:  Verbal Irony: Something happens that is the opposite of what is expected (ex: to avoid a wet dog splashing him, a guy trips into a pond) The audience is aware of information that characters in the story are unaware of (ex: Romeo does not know that Juliet is pretending to be dead) You mean the opposite of what you say (ex: “well aren’t you clever”)

Elements of the Short Story  Ambiguous: Open to more than one interpretation, has a double meaning.
