Unit 1: Three Worlds Meet Chapter 1: The World in 1500 Section 5: Early European Explorers

About 10 years ago, scientists discovered a new planet…

And they feel it ’ s habitable – it has all the necessities for humans to live there And, they now feel humans have the technology to get there And, they now feel humans have the technology to get there

But, there are some questions that have to be answered first Why would anyone want to make the long, dangerous trip? Why would anyone want to make the long, dangerous trip? What would America have to gain by going there? What would America have to gain by going there? Would humans bring with them some potential harm to this new planet? Would humans bring with them some potential harm to this new planet?

Sailors seeking a route to Asia depended on the skill of the ships navigator (person who plans the course of a ship)

Exploration was very risky Many explorers died before they: Many explorers died before they: A: got very far A: got very far B: found what they B: found what they were looking for were looking for (people like John Cabot / Henry Hudson / Henry Hudson / Magellan / James Cooke) Magellan / James Cooke)

Some of the more famous:

The Death of Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo While wintering in the islands, relations with the natives were sometimes contentious. One sailor reported, "all the time the armada was in the Isla Capitana the Indians there never stopped fighting us." Just before Christmas, a landing party sent ashore to get water was attacked by the island's residents. The sailors called out to the ship for help. As he came ashore, Cabrillo lost his footing and broke some bones in the fall. Still, he refused to leave the island until all the men in the shore party were rescued. He was then taken back to the ship, but there was little anyone could do to treat his injuries. Realizing he was dying, Cabrillo turned command of the expedition to his ship's pilot, Bartolome Ferrer. He then worked to bring the record of the voyage up to date, but was only able to complete part of the job before he died on January 3, Cabrillo led the rescue party.
