WHY BCM? BCM: THE FUTURE OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE

BCM:OUTCOMES MEASUREMENT How will BCM demonstrate to medical groups the cost benefits of using BCM services? Reducing IP psychiatric admissions and utilization Reducing use of ER for non-emergency care Managing patients with multiple clinical and behavioral diagnoses

Ongoing management of patients with low risk factors PROMIS—The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System—for less critical patients as well as high utilizers. SF-36 How is EarlyByrd Software working for medical groups and BCM providers? How is the EarlyByrd software program working for the medical groups and the BCM providers? OUTCOMES MEASUREMENT

MEASURING BCM PROGRSS How will BCM demonstrate to psychologists/mental health providers the cost benefits of joining BCM? APA endorsement Dialogue and support from DMG, Loyola Health System

MEASURING BCM PROGRSS The medical community is reaching toward behavioral care providers, e.g., PCPs, pain clinics, and physical rehabilitation programs. When HRSA wanted to hire Behavioral Care Consultants (BCCs) for Integrated Care in Mental Health Centers, HRSA could find no Illinois Graduate Schools who were training BBCs. BCM has BCCs trained through UMass.

MEASURING BCM PROGRESS Some medical groups will use their own psychiatrists and psychologists and see BCM as a competitor. BCM is navigating through the roadblocks and resistance in the medical community. BCM is working with consultants for formal launch and eventually to negotiate contracts with ACOs and Patient-Centered Medical Homes.

BCM PROGESS (CONT’D) Medical doctor Lissa Rankin in her book “Mind Over Medicine” explains how stress causes disease, how disease causes stress, and that medicine that neglects stress can kill. Dr. Rankin explains that many medical doctors are thrown off their schedules if they explore the stress factors involved in patients’ illness.

PSYCHOLOGISTS: HEALTHCARE LEADERS Dr. Rankin recommends that patients write their own self-healing prescription and use psychologists, counselors, and other wise guides to support them on their healing journey. Dr. Lissa Rankin, MD, is calling for psychologists to have a much greater role in healthcare.

A NEW HEALTHCARE PARADIGM Physical health is thriving, flourishing, and hardiness, a state that increases life expectancy, decreases the likelihood of disease, and improves the prognosis when illness strikes. (pp , “Flourishing”, Martin Seligman, PhD.) BCM is pioneering thriving, flourishing, hardiness to fight disease. BCM: The Future of Behavioral Care.
