10 Stupid Things We Do: A study of the 10 Commandments and how we break them.

We Treat God’s Name Carelessly Deuteronomy 5:11 ‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. The Third Commandment: “Do not misuse God’s Name”

The Name of the Lord  There are many “names” (titles, descriptive terms) which apply to God.  Jehovah-Rohi – Shepherd Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

The Name of the Lord  There are many “names” (titles, descriptive terms) which apply to God.  Jehovah-Rohi – Shepherd – Psalm 23:1  Jehovah Shammah – God who is there – Ezekiel 48:35 All the way around shall be eighteen thousand cubits; and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE.”

The Name of the Lord  There are many “names” (titles, descriptive terms) which apply to God.  Jehovah-Rohi – Shepherd – Psalm 23:1  Jehovah Shammah – God who is there – Ezekiel 48:35  Jehovah Jireh – God will provide – Genesis 22:14 Genesis 22:14 - And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”

The Name of the Lord  There are so many names we could study one name each day.  It would take more than a year to study them all.

Misuse of His Name  There are several ways we use bad language  Abuse of God’s name  Filthy words (gutter language)  Swearing (false vows)  Profanity  Cursing  Take what is holy – drag it through the mud Bad Language

Misuse of His Name  Many “Christians” misuse God’s name  God is not the “big guy upstairs”  When surprised – “Oh my God”  When frightened – “God, you scared me”  Lady in grocery store, “Lord, did you hear him swear?” Bad Language

Misuse of His Name Deuteronomy 23: “When you make a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not delay to pay it; for the LORD your God will surely require it of you, and it would be sin to you. 22 But if you abstain from vowing, it shall not be sin to you. 23 That which has gone from your lips you shall keep and perform, for you voluntarily vowed to the LORD your God what you have promised with your mouth. Fail to Keep Promises

Misuse of His Name Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed— 5 Better not to vow than to vow and not pay. Fail to Keep Promises

Misuse of His Name  If we worship God, and confess our faith in Christ –  But deny Him in our lives the rest of the week –  We have broken this commandment of God. Hypocrisy

Misuse of His Name 1 John 4:20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? Hypocrisy

Misuse of His Name John 14:15 If you love Me, keep My commandments. Hypocrisy

Proper Use  We must acknowledge Him, claim Him  Romans 10:9 - that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Profession

Proper Use  Worship the Lord  Sing praises to His name  Pray to the Lord  Call upon God  Thank God for His goodness Prayer & Praise

Proper Use  In legal papers  File your taxes  In a court of law  Perjury is the penalty for breaking this promise Taking Legal Oaths

The Penalty  Not be guiltless  With guilt comes punishment  The purpose of discipline is to bring repentance  The purpose of repentance is to restore fellowship

Conclusion  We must reverence and respect the name of God  We must show reverence for all that is holy and sacred  We must not abuse God’s name.  It is a stupid thing to treat the name of God carelessly.

We Treat God’s Name Carelessly  How are you treating the name of God?  Is your life showing a reverence for God?  Is God pleased with your use of His name?
