IT’S ALL IN THE CONSUMER ADVERTISING

BELL WORK 1.Please complete the survey at the back of yesterday’s article packets. 2.Please take a few minutes to review your Odyssey essay revisions. Now is the time to ask me questions or clarify comments. 3.Let’s review your exams briefly!

QUICK INTRO What product slogan can you just not get out of your head? Ex: I can’t stop singing “Stanley Steamers. Tough on dirt, gentle on carpet!” (I know, I’m super weird.)

ADVERTISING The act or practice of calling public attention to a product, service, need, etc., especially by paid announcements in newspapers and magazines, over radio or television, on billboards, etc. Advertisements are created for consumers. Consumer : a person, group of people, or organization that uses a product or service.

ADVERTISING AND MARKETING Marketing : what’s involved in getting products sold, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling. When companies want to advertise something, they have a lot to consider: 1.Who is our audience? (age, gender, race) 2.What are their likes and dislikes? 3.How can we get their attention? 4.When can we get their attention? 5.What do we want them to know/believe about us and our product?

METHODS OF ADVERTISING 1.Band Wagon 2.Avant Garde 3.Card Stacking 4.Facts and Figures 5.Wit and Humor 6.Testimonial

BAND WAGON When a consumer is attracted to a cause, agrees to join an organization or club, or purchase an item because of its popularity. The consumer is persuaded to “follow the crowd” rather than to use “evidence” to justify a choice.

AVANT GARDE The advertiser suggest that the product will put the consumer ahead of the crowd by having the product first.

CARD STACKING When an advertiser stresses only the positive qualities and does not tell any of the negative ones. The consumer is given only one side of the story about a product.

FACTS AND FIGURES When an advertiser uses statistical evidence and facts to prove that a product is better than another product.

WIT AND HUMOR When the consumer is attracted to a product because the advertisement makes them laugh, or it is entertaining.

TESTIMONIAL When an advertiser connects a famous or respectable person with a product through the use of quotations or endorsements from that famous or respectable person.

YOU TRY

HOMEWORK Follow along on the homework sheet as I read it to you. It is due tomorrow because tomorrow you will begin a mini project where you will be asked to create your own ad for your own product.

BELL WORK Based on yesterday’s homework, write down which method of advertising you liked the most? Why do you think that is? If you did not complete the homework, then write which method you believe is the most popular or successful method of marketing and why.

IN PAIRS 1.Brainstorm a product you want to create and who you think would buy it. 1.It can be a totally new product or a combination of old to become something new (a heated steering wheel cover). 2.Make a quick sketch of your product and give it a name. 3.Fill out the Commercial Advertisement sheet for your product using COMPLETE SENTENCES!

BILLBOARD ADVERTISEMENT On construction sheet(s)/poster paper you will create your billboard ad for your product. Think about your target audience and what would appeal most to that group with a single picture and caption or slogan. On the BACK: write your names Target audience the method of advertisement you chose to use why you think that method will appeal MOST to your target audience.

PRESENTATION! Your ad will NEVER make it to TV if you don’t “pitch” your idea. Come in excited, persuasive, and make us believe that your product is worth selling and that it will be successful. Graded on: Eye Contact with the audience (not just the teacher) Projecting (speak loudly for all to hear) Content Knowledge (being prepared and “knowing your stuff”) Posture (stand up straight, look professional) Creativity (“pitch” your idea with enthusiasm and originality

T.V. ARTICLE 1.INDIVIDUALLY! 1.Read the article entitled “T.V. Free America.” 2.Highlight interesting facts and ideas. 2.Respond to the 6 questions on the worksheet with the person sitting beside you. I will do my best to make sure we are always exposed to both sides of an argument, to the positive and negative; it may not be on the same day, but it is always necessary to look at all sides of an issue, so we will, too.
