The Thirteen Colonies – Individual Work

1.Find out some information about John Cabot. Who did he work for? Where did he sail and why? an Italian sailor and explorer who worked for the English crown, first to discover North American continent, believed to have anchored at Newfoundland, 1496 King HenryVII gave Cabot letters patent with the following charge :

...free authority, faculty and power to sail to all parts, regions and coasts of the eastern, western and northern sea, under our banners, flags and ensigns, with five ships or vessels of whatsoever burden and quality they may be, and with so many and with such mariners and men as they may wish to take with them in the said ships, at their own proper costs and charges, to find, discover and investigate whatsoever islands, countries, regions or provinces of heathens and infidels, in whatsoever part of the world placed, which before this time were unknown to all Christians

2.When did Sir Walter Raleigh put down a colony on Roanoke Island? What was its end? an expedition organized by Raleigh and carried out by his cousin and another man, there were a few groups of colonists, but they either abandoned the settlement or disappeared, the last one - later to be called "the lost colony" disappeared after three years without additional supplies from England, leaving behind only the famous carving in a post of the fort "CROATAN" - and "CRO" in the nearby tree, instructed to do so by Governor White - to say where they have gone

3.During the rule of James I the English founded just another colony in North America. Which one? Jamestown 1607, the first really permanent colony on the North Am continent, a good strategic location, but not very suitable for life - mosquitoes, but John Rolfe introduced a strain of tobacco plant which they successfully exported, he also married Pocahontas - a local indian girl, Jamestown became the capital of Virginia Colony with the first locally-elected body of representatives - house of Burgesses

4.What was the life like in Jamestown? Describe it. What did the colonists grow? Who worked there? they grew especially tobacco indentured servants and later slaves there were schools and churches

5.What about Pilgrims, where did they settle? What other colonies did they establish? Pilgrims or Pilgrim Fathers settled in present day Plymouth, Massachussetts, in 1620, seeking religious freedom, they persuaded some English investors to found a new colony in NA, arrived without patent, felt to be free to do whatever independent of the company, they signed so called Mayflower compact, Thanksgiving - to give thanks for surviving the first winter - fish, water fowl, berries, lobsters, venison etc.

6.Who was William Penn? What’s his connection to the early colonization in North America? He was a real estate enterpreneur and the owner of the colony of Pennsylvania, Quaker, founded Philadelphia, was very tolerant towards other religions and the natives – very good relationship with the local indian tribes, his colony attracted many persecuted huguenots or Jews

7.What other two nations joined the British in the colonizing efforts on the Atlantic Coast? Where? Dutch – New York and New Jersey Swedish – Pennsylvania and Delaware

8.What were some results of the French and Indian Wars? How did the British government respond to them? They were very expensive and thus the British governement wanted to get some money back from the colonists through taxes, after the war the French were left with nothing else but a small island near Newfoundland and some islands in the Carribean
