A base word is a word that can stand alone.

A prefix is a word part added to the beginning of a base word. For example, in the word retry, try is the base word and re- is the prefix added at the beginning.

The spelling of the base word does not change when adding a prefix. Knowing the meaning of a prefix helps you figure out the meaning of the whole word.

 un- means “not” or “the opposite of”  re- means “again” or “ back”  pre- means “before” Study the meaning of the following prefixes until you can remember what each means. Salir
