341 Lab Overview Use this PowerPoint presentation to guide you through the labs this session. To make the links work first make this slide show run by clicking on the following button on the bottom right of the screen.

The point of the lab assignments is to build your skills to analyze data to be able to answer questions about social programs. To do this we will follow a 3 step pattern: Practice- The first Tuesday you see a lab will be your opportunity to practice it (either alone or with colleagues). The deliverable for this will be a typed or handwritten list of instructions listing instructions for each of the main steps of the lab in as much detail as you need to be able to complete the lab. Teach-The Thursday after your practice lab day a group of students will practice teaching the key parts of the lab to the class. Each member of the class will sign up to participate in only one teaching day. The deliverable for this will be a team effort in which those signed up to teach that day will use a team effort to accomplish the following: a. standing in front of the class and leading them through an interesting or important part of the lab; b. explaining how you might apply what you learned in this lab toward your final project; c. with the help of the professor fielding questions about parts of the lab that members of the class find troublesome; and c. having some members of the team walk around the room to assist people who are following along with the instruction. Test- The second Tuesday you see the lab is your chance to test yourself. You will complete the lab completely on your own without the help of colleagues or the professor. The deliverable for this is handing in a paper copy of the completed lab in the next class period. Test labs should be exact replications of the labs you watch on video – i.e. what you submit should look exactly like what you see in my example (unless otherwise instructed)

The first Step Practice Lab Day 1 – Watch the following video: Lab 1: Tables and Relationships – Take notes on the steps that will allow you to learn them. Cite the minute and second in the video each step takes place. Make sure you list all the main steps and be as detailed as you need to be. – Some examples of notes: Link to examples – Hand in your notes next class

The Second Step Teaching Lab Day 2 – (if you signed up) Pick an important minute in the video, open it up and remind the class what was going on. Then walk through the step with them. Walk around the room and help people. Then take questions about the lab in general. ALWAYS refer to a specific TIME in the video so we all know where we are!! – This is your chance to focus on what you thought was important and how you might use it for your final project. Remember that for your final paper in this class you will need to create a database for your internship organization that contains: 2 tables, 1 relationship, 1 form, 1 subform, 1 query and 1 report page – All Submit a paper printout (or handwritten version) of your notes.

The third Step Test Lab Day 3 – Re-Watch the following video along with the notes you made during the practice lab day.: Lab 1: Tables and Relationships – Complete the lab exactly as seen in the video. – Hand your database (what is built of it so far) digitally when requested
