The Introduction "The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one." (Mark Twain) Welcome to Unit 5

Outline Example Example of Sentence Outline Several aspects must be considered in writing a sentence outline. If you have chosen to write a sentence outline, all headings and sub-headings must be in sentence form. As in any outline, remember that a division or sudivision can not be divided into one part; therefore, if there is an "A" there must be a "B," and if there is a "1" there must be a "2." Negative Effects of Divorce on Adolescents I. When family conflicts arise as a result of divorce, adolescents suffer. A. During the first year, these young people may be depressed due to conflicts between the custodial and non-custodial parents. B. Grandparents, aunts, and uncles are often restricted by visitation provisions. C. Almost without exception, adolescents find divorce very painful, but they react in differing degrees depending on their age. II. Some of the most negative effects on adolescents may be associated with economic problems. A. The family will most probably experience a lower standard of living due to the cost of maintaining two households. B. Some female custodial parents have poor job skills and must train before entering the job market. C. The lower standard of living may result in misunderstanding and conflicts within the family. D. The decreased standard of living, particularly for an untrained female custodial parent, often causes relocation.

Topics Present a topic for the class to Brainstorm.. I’ll begin: Should corporal punishment be allowed in school? Give the pros and cons. Please identify which is which?

Then, in April of 1994, in congressional testimony, executives employed by seven of the largest U.S. tobacco companies swore that nicotine was not addictive. They also denied that they controlled nicotine levels in cigarettes. Also in 1994, Mississippi filed the first of twenty-four state lawsuits to get tobacco companies to pay for smokers ʹ Medicaid bills. Mississippi was the first state to settle with tobacco. In 1997 and 1998, Florida and Texas settled with the tobacco industry. Many more lawsuits have followed. Strategies: a. Provide background, context, or history b. Explain an issue c. Introduction Example 2 The jurors in the recent Florida tobacco trial thought they would be serving for three to four months. However, that changed quickly to two years. Leighton Finegan, an assistant principal at and elementary school in Dade County, Florida, felt that doing his civil duty had a huge impact on his life and his job. When the trial began, he had just finished his first year as an assistant principal at a high school considered to be the best in Dade. He was able to return to work to complete the summer school program and get ready for the fall, but he felt as if he were starting his career all over again. However, he believed that his participation as a juror was significant in exposing the tobacco industry ʹ s lying to the public about the dangers of smoking. So, even though he lost two years of his career, he is proud of his accomplishment. Strategies: a. Provide background, context, or history b. Explain an issue c. Present the sides in a controversy d. Warnings became stronger on cigarette packs in Through the years, smoking was banned on airline flights of six hours or less. In addition, smoking on interstate buses was banned. Writer’s Block Strategies Doing something out of the ordinary. If writer's block comes from a lack of new ideas, attempts to spark creativity by going somewhere new or doing something different can be useful. Returning to the writing after a lapse of a day or two. Write a basic plot outline of the story, if having problems keeping the story on the rails. Brainstorming at the beginning of the writing can help the writer by relating every point to another. Reading, watching movies or plays, or similar activities that might bring inspiration. Project This week, you will post a draft of the introduction paragraph for your autobiography so your instructor can offer suggestions, tips and comments. You will build on the brainstorming from Unit 3 and the thesis and outline from Unit 4. You will make the writing you use more formal than the informal approach you used in pre-writing. Project Description: Imagine that you have completed your program at Kaplan University and have been offered your dream job! The company or organization you will be working for wants to issue a press release announcing that you are joining them and in what capacity. In order to do so, they need a minimum 500 Word autobiographical statement from you. Your autobiography should include and introduction that identifies who you are, where you live, the company or organization that has hired you, and your new job title. It will end with the thesis statement and follow the outline that you submitted in Unit 4. Because your autobiography will appear in the company newsletter and in local newspapers, it should be written in third person (no I or you), include concrete nouns, descriptive adjectives, active verbs, effective transitions between paragraphs, and should be relatively error free.

3 rd person Make sure that you write your paper as the journalist in the 3 rd person. Correct example: Nicole grew up in New York City where she pursued her Bachelor of Arts Degree and Queens College. Incorrect Example: I grew up in New York City. I went to school……………..
