Discuss the Advantages and Disadvantages of the Internet Done by: Yeow Min Feng(30), Lam Guan Xiong(10), Ethan Yan(7), Ryan Loh(18)

Breaking down the Question Keywords are “advantages”, “disadvantages” and “Internet”. Advantages are circumstances that put someone in a favourable position and disadvantages are circumstances that put a person in an unfavourable position. The Internet is a global computer network that supports billions of websites including social media, knowledge websites and video games.

Minor Introduction The internet has become part of our daily lives. Many are unable to go a day without checking their social media accounts. To ask a person to not check their social media would make them feel not up to date. As students, the Internet has also integrated into our school life. We make use of the Internet to receive homework from teachers and even go online for our lessons on Home Based Learning Days.

Point 1 P: The Internet enables people to stay connected. E: The Internet enables people to stay connected through social media platforms. Social media platforms are platforms on which millions of users are able to interact and post photos and videos for friends and family to view later. E: Websites such as Facebook and Twitter enable users to share photos, videos and even articles with their friends and family.

Point 2 P: The Internet has a wide variety of entertainment websites and games that can get users addicted. E: Users may start turning to the Internet for entertainment as they are stressed, but as time goes by, they tend to spend more time on the sites or games in order to experience the same pleasure as when they first began. This process is called addiction and causes users to spend large amounts of time on the Internet, resulting in ineffective time management and procrastination.

Point 2 cont’d E: Quoted from the Huffington post “He played the game to pass the time: ten hours of uninterrupted questing. Then, mind hazed by the room’s thick cigarette smoke and eyes stinging from the monitor’s flicks and throbs, he decided to step outside for some fresh air. Feng stood, took three steps then stumbled and collapsed, his mouth foaming.” Such extreme cases of video game addiction may lead to users paying serious prices, and in certain cases, death.

Point 3 P: The Internet poses a great security risk to users’ personal information and privacy, and in some cases, even their personal safety. E: Users tend to post pictures or videos of themselves on their social media. This makes it extremely easy for others to “stalk” them on social media. It may seem perfectly fine since they had put up their pictures for the world to see but sometimes, people with bad intentions may stalk them for a prolonged period before

Point 3 cont’d trying to befriend them based on their interests. E: A social experiment done by Coby Persin in which he befriended 3 girls on social media with full knowledge of their parents and arranged to meet up with them in real life.

Social Experiment by Cody Persin

Elaboration on video The video was a social experiment to test how easy it was to trick youths into meeting up with strangers in real life. In all 3 cases, the parents believed that the daughter would not fall into the trap set by Coby Persin. However, in all 3 cases, the parents were proved wrong. This indicates that today’s youths are extremely gullible and are easy targets online.
