King Cotton

Cotton is a soft fibre that grows around the seeds of the cotton plant.

Raw cotton came from

The U.S.A

The West Indies

to Britain

Advantages of cotton Cotton clothing was lighter and softer to wear than wool. It could be washed more easily and so was more hygienic.

Prices of cotton At first, cotton was expensive. By the late eighteenth century supplies of cotton were increasing. The price was falling because it was produced by slave labour in the West Indies and the USA. The availability of this cheap cotton brought great benefits to the British cotton industry.

The Cotton Industry was the major textile industry in Britain by produced great prosperity. employed thousands of people. was also a very important export. was the first to be industrialised.

Lancashire was the centre of the cotton industry. The cotton trade with the USA made Liverpool Britain’s busiest port. Britain was the only country that was mass-producing manufactured cotton goods. They were exported all over the world. The Cotton Industry
