Early Age Frederick Douglass was born on February 14, 1818 near Easton Maryland He was the son of Harriet Bailey, although captain Aaron Anthony claimed owner ship of Douglass He moved with his grandmother at a young age In 1824 Douglass was separated from his grandmother and taken to live in on a large plantation of Colonel Edward Lloyd

Growing Up At age 12 or 13 Frederick Douglass bought his own copy of The Columbian Orator With that he taught himself public speaking In 1833 he organized secret schools for slaves Then refused to submit to whipping He joined and improved society of free black caulker and eventually bought his own freedom

Slave Days Fredericks new owner rented him out to a farmer known as “The Slave Breaker”. He beat Frederick Douglass several times until Douglass finally stepped up and fought back. After that he never hit Frederick again.

Frederick’s Escape Frederick and four other slaves made plans to run away, but they were betrayed and got sent to prison in 1836 His final escape was in 1838 and made his way to New York where Mr. David Ruggles, took him in.
