* What is Astronomy? * What will be studied? * How is it different than other sciences? * What science is most closely related? Before you leave today, pick up KR Community Letter and Grading Policies Brochure Read and share with parents

* Write 20 questions that you expect will be answered this semester. -Begin with what you think you know -Generate a few questions about what you do not know and then…… * Watch the Greatest Discoveries with Bill Nye: AstronomyGreatest Discoveries with Bill Nye: Astronomy * As you watch indicate by highlight or star those questions that you knew well * If you do not finish in class, go to YouTube or Nash S-Drive Outbox and watch.

Learning Targets: Determine your knowledge of astronomy Review the expectations and class rules Model the solar system Success Criteria: Ability to list the topics of astronomy Repeat the class rules and expectations Rendering of the solar system Reminder: Astronomy 20 Questions highlighted or starred with the completion of the Bill Nye Great Discoveries video (on YouTube or the Nash S-Drive) Due by Friday, 9/4/15 & Be ready for a quiz about the Discoveries

Create a scale model of the solar system: (due today) - Use blank paper and pencil (colored pencils if you choose) - Draw the relative sizes of the planet (label with the names) - Draw the relative size of the sun - Draw a star to represent Alpha Centauri the star closest to our solar system (What do you know about this so-called star)? - Place the objects in their relative locations to scale - Draw your scale model and indicate the distance between each object and the diameter of each object in millimeters (obtain rulers)

* Demonstrate your knowledge of the expectations for this class * Describe the text noting the layout and what is included in it and how it will help you learn about astronomy * Describe your instructor Submit: Scale of the Solar System

* Submit the signed form indicating that you shared the syllabus with your parents * Take the syllabus quiz (formative grade) No talking during the quiz
