A Look at Tennessee’s Agriculture Tennessee’s Economy

Agriculture The best areas for agriculture are found in West Tennessee, the Central Basin, and East Tennessee valley and ridge (soil and landscape) Livestock income is derived mostly from cattle. (dairy products and poultry) The Central Basin is known for the Tennessee walking horse.

Agriculture Income from crop production comes mostly from tobacco, soybeans, cotton, and corn. Tobacco is grown mainly in eastern and central Tennessee. Cotton is found in western Tennessee, which also produces most of the soybeans and corn.

Mining and Timber Coal and other mineral products are important to the state’s economy. The product most mined today is stone. Limestone, marble, zinc and Phosphate are all found in Eastern Tennessee. The uplands of Eastern Tennessee are sources of timber products – oak, cedar, pine, and hemlock.

Manufacturing and Transportation Tennessee is an important automobile manufacturing center. Memphis is an important center of cotton, chemical and paper production. Nashville is home to factories that print books and music and make transportation equipment and textiles. Chattanooga is a center for metal, textile, chemical, and food products.
