What Makes a Computing Device? A Computing Device Has Four Parts –Input –Output –Storage –CPU

What Are Input Devices? An Input Device Sends Information to the Computer. Examples Include: –Mouse –Keyboard –Scanner –Microphone –Web Camera

What Are Output Devices? An Output Device Gets Information From a Computer. Examples Include: –Monitor/Display –Speakers –Printer

What Are Input/Output Devices? Sometimes There Are Device That Do Both… An Input/Output Device Gets Information From AND Sends Information to a Computer. Examples Include: –Touch Screen Display –Network Interface –Global Positioning System

What is a Modem? A Modem is an I/O device. Also known as a Input and Output device. –A Modem converts the digital signal from your computer to a analog language your phone line understands. (Called MODulation) –When the information reaches the computer on the other end, the analog phone signal is converted to a digital one. (Called DEModulation) That is why it is called a Modem… –For MODulate … and … DEModulate –The speed that the information transfers is called BAUD. The faster the information moves the higher the BAUD RATE.

What is a Modem continued?

What Are Storage Devices? An Storage Device Stores Information For The Computer. –On Some Devices, Information is Lost When The Power is Shut Off. Examples Include: –Memory Stick / Memory Card –FLASH KEY –Hard Disk Drive –Floppy Drive –CD-ROM/ CD-RW/ DVD

What Is A CPU? A CPU is Also Known as: –The “CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT” What Does the CPU Do??? –A CPU Manages All Other Devices in the Computer.

What Makes a CPU???

What How Does A Computer Communicate???? A Computer Works Like a Classroom: –One Person Talks at a Time –The Teacher is in Control of the Room, Like the CPU –If a Student, or Peripheral Wants to Talk, The Student Raises Their Hand –The Teacher Chooses to Select a Student –Once The Student Speaks, Then Control Returns to the Teacher. –In the Case of the Computer, If a Student Wants to Talk to Another Student, Then the Message Is First Passed to the Teacher, Then the Teacher Passes the Message to The Student.

Computer Diagram, Another Example…

Exercise… Using Inspiration –Create a diagram with Input/Output/and Storage devices –List at least three items under each category –Also add an additional category called Input- Output and list those items that perform both functions.

Exercise Alt… Students Must Form a Group as a Complete Computing System. –Identify the Components as Input, Output, Storage, CPU –CPU Manages the Conversation Asks Questions. Grants Control to One Device at a Time Asks Device Type Asks Survey Question Goes to Another Device –If One Device has a Question For Another Device, CPU Must Grant Permission, and Relay Question. You Have 7 Minutes …
