Reacting to Life-Threatening Emergencies Everyday Life Skills Chapter 1 – Lesson 2

First aid for choking What is choking?

First aid for choking What is choking? When food or some object block a person’s airway and prevents breathing

First aid for choking Signs That Someone is Choking  Victim can’t speak

First aid for choking Signs That Someone is Choking  Victim can’t speak  Victim turns pale or blue

First aid for choking Signs That Someone is Choking  Victim can’t speak  Victim turns pale or blue  Victim is using the universal distress signal for choking.

First aid for choking Signs That Someone is Choking  Victim can’t speak  Victim turns pale or blue  Victim is using the universal distress signal for choking.  Victim is gasping, has a weak cough, or loses consciousness.

First aid for choking ASK if he/she can talk. If a victim can still speak or cough, some air is getting through. Allow him/her to cough up the object. NEVER pound a person on the back to force it out. That could force the object further down and completely block the wind pipe.

First aid for choking If the victim cannot speak, cough, or breathe due to choking, perform the HEIMLICH MANEUVER.

First aid for choking How to do the heimlich

First Aid for Respiratory Failure Choking is only one reason people stop breathing. Heart attack, drowning, electrical shock, or a severe allergic reaction can cause people to stop breathing (respiratory failure). This person will have pale or blue skin, especially around the mouth or fingers.

First Aid for Respiratory Failure R espiratory Failure (has a pulse, not breathing LEADS TO R escue Breathing

RESCUE BREATHING VIDEO

Cardiac…Cardio….My HEART! Anything that starts with cardiac or cardio has to do with the heart.

You are under ARREST! Cardiac arrest – a condition in which the heart has stopped beating and there is no pulse.

Cardiac Arrest = CPR If someone’s heart stops (cardiac arrest), it’s time for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. What is another name for cardiopulmonary resuscitation?

Cardiac arrest? CPR!

REVIEW  How do we save this person?
