Please kindly disseminate to your colleagues who may be interested to attend. About NEWRI Launched in 2008, NEWRI represents NTU’s efforts over the last two decades to be a committed and active participant in Singapore’s Environmental and Water Technology (EWT) research and development landscape. Through NEWRI, the university aims to groom talent and provide EWT leadership, supporting Singapore’s pursuit of sustainable urban centre status. The NEWRI ecosystem offers a contiguous value chain of research, translation, development, and application that enables close collaborations with industry and community. It is represented by the core interests and activities of its 8 members which include four centres of excellence supported by EWI/EDB, a research group, a NTU company, a philanthropic initiative and a Master’s programme in environmental science and engineering. These NEWRI entities are inter-disciplinary and have activities which are inter-institutional. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Prof. Bidya Sagar Pani, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India Prof. B. S. Pani initiated investigations on three-dimensional wall jets during the early seventies and was awarded a Ph.D. degree in civil engineering by the University of Alberta, Edmonton. He pursued his research interests on diffusion of Turbulent Jets, with emphasis on multiple outlets. He evolved a sound theoretical basis for predicting the mean flow characteristics of jets in stagnant and co-flowing ambients based on Reichardt’s hypothesis. His other research interests include sediment transport, hydraulic structures, open channel flow and physical modeling. He has over four decades of teaching and research experience in various universities. A major part of his career has been spent at IIT Bombay, teaching UG and PG courses in fluid mechanics, and guiding Doctoral and Master’s students. He has authored and co-authored nearly 100 articles published in National and International Journals. He has authored a book on ‘Turbulent Jets- a point source method for hydraulic engineering’ which will very soon be released by the Cambridge University Press (India). Prof. Pani has taught in many universities abroad, like University of Hong Kong, Concordia University (Montreal), Dalhousie University (Halifax) and California State University (Fullerton). Currently, he is an Emeritus Fellow of IIT Bombay. ABSTRACT A simple momentum transport model was proposed by Reichardt in the early forties of the twentieth century. The original model has been modified in the evolution of the point-source equation. The application of the point-source technique and the method of superposition will be dealt with in the lecture. The new theoretical framework has been supported by many experimental observations of other researchers. As a prelude to discussion on multiple jets in a co-flowing stream, results on the excess-velocity decay, the growth of the shear layer and the dilution occurring for a single jet will be presented. The spreading hypothesis has been generalized for co-flowing jets by the inclusion of a link factor. The distribution of the excess momentum flux u.∆u is seen to be Gaussian in nature. Based on the principle of superposition, the decay of the maximum excess velocity and the dilution are predicted for multiple jets in a co-flowing stream. The predictions are in good agreement with the available observed data. The point-source method also offers many advantages like, treating the entire flow field as a single entity and not to worry about the existence of the potential core, the virtual origin correction etc. About DHI-NTU Centre Through an integrated approach, encompassing both research and education, DHI-NTU Centre strives towards a sustainable long-term conservation of environment while improving the quality of life for all. The Centre was jointly established by DHI Singapore (DHI) and NTU in October 2007, with support from the Environment & Water Industry Development Council (EWI). It is an inter-disciplinary research and training centre for the water & environment industry in Singapore. The centre works towards development of environmentally friendly solutions, and tools and technologies to support a sustainable ecology.
