Technical seminar presentation GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM Gopal Behera Roll#IT [1] The Global Positioning System Presented by Gopal Behera Under the guidance of Duti Krishna panda

Technical seminar presentation GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM Gopal Behera Roll#IT [2] What is GPS?  GPS stands for Global Positioning System, a system able to show you your exact position on the Earth anytime, anywhere, in any weather. A biologist in Brazil uses a hand-held GPS receiver in wildlife research projects.

Technical seminar presentation GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM Gopal Behera Roll#IT [3] GPS System Space Segment – 24 GPS satellites, orbit at 20,200kilometers above the Earth. Control Segment – The satellites are continuously monitored by ground stations located at Hawaii and Kwajalein in the Pacific Ocean User Segment – The satellites transmit signals that can be detected by anyone with a GPS receiver. Using the receiver, you can determine your location with great precision.

Technical seminar presentation GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM Gopal Behera Roll#IT [6] How Does GPS Work? A Matter of Timing

Technical seminar presentation GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM Gopal Behera Roll#IT [7] Distance from a Satellite 1. Synchronize the Satellite & Receiver Clocks 2. Measure Travel Time of Satellite Signal, t 3. Distance (r) = Speed of Light (c) * t

Technical seminar presentation GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM Gopal Behera Roll#IT [8] Civil Engineering - Road construction, Earth moving, structural placement - Monitoring structural deformation Mining - Drilling blast holes precisely - Open pit mining equipment can be controlled using inputs provided by GPS Application

Technical seminar presentation GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM Gopal Behera Roll#IT [9] Application (Global) Primary planned use when the system was conceived Both military and civilian applications In the future, all planes, boats, etc. will have GPS installed Used for Route navigation Safety (collision avoidance) Automated vehicle navigation

Technical seminar presentation GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM Gopal Behera Roll#IT [10] Advantage Easily finding the way costing saving by reducing the set up time at survey site more reliable wireless communication is more reliable time saving satellite communication is done accurately research is done using GPS data synchronization is done

Technical seminar presentation GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM Gopal Behera Roll#IT [11] Disadvantage in case of ionosphere & troposphere some amount of signal is delay Due to multipath communication the travel time increased Does not work underground, underwater or indoor
