Alderwood Middle School Volunteer Training October 12, 2011

Welcome to Alderwood Middle School Expectations for Edmonds School District Volunteers Developmental Assets

The 40 Developmental Assets represent everyday wisdom about positive experiences and characteristics for young people. Search Institute research has found that these assets are powerful influences on adolescent behavior—both protecting young people from many different risky behaviors, and promoting positive attitudes and actions. Support (External Assets) 1. Family support—Family life provides high levels of love and support. 2. Positive family communication—Young person and her or his parent(s) communicate positively, and young person is willing to seek advice and counsel from parents. 3. Other adult relationships—Young person receives support from three or more nonparent adults. 4. Caring neighborhood—Young person experiences caring neighbors. 5. Caring school climate—School provides a caring, encouraging environment. 6. Parent involvement in schooling—Parent(s) are actively involved in helping young person succeed in school.

Volunteers should not have primary responsibility for the supervision of students. They may add adult presence for groups of students, but staff member must be responsible for supervision in regular school activities such as the lunch room, arrival and departure of students to school. Volunteers should not have access to confidential information or to grade student work or assess student learning. Volunteers can support student learning activities that are supplemental to direct instruction. Volunteers may provide supervision while working with a staff member at a school event – i.e. dances, field trips, etc.

Issues as related to safety, neglect, abuse need to be shared directly with a school staff member and reported to a building administrator Harassment/Intimidation/Bullying (H/I/B)
