Networking Components DAVID INGUANZO 7/10/14

HUB ~$20 ($20 - $1,000+) Best for: home networks light traffic business environment connecting multiple computers

HUB  Link computers and devices together (using Ethernet cord is required)  Shares bandwidth between all computers and devices (use of bandwidth effects entire network)  Transmits data to all computers and devices connected (excessive data transmission if only meant for one-on-one transmission)

Switch ~$30 ($20 - $1,000+) Best for: heavy use home networks business environment connecting multiple computers heavy multimedia use

Switch  Very similar looing to a HUB  Connects all computers and devices together (wired connection required)  Single address data transmission (will only direct data to computer or device intended for)  Every computer and device has dedicated link on network (high bandwidth use on one computer does not effect other devices)

Router ~$50 ($20 - $300) Best for: any home network most business environment connecting multiple devices (wired or wireless)

Router  Relays data to anywhere in the network or out of internal network  Links computers and devices to each other and internet (wired and wireless connections used)  Home/low-end routers support few computers and devices (usually 4 wired connections and a few more wireless)  High-end routers also available (allow for higher amount of connections)

Bridge ~$70 ($40-$1000+) Best for: Large networks Multiple networks Different networks used simultaneously

Bridge  Acts similar to a Switch  Connects, or bridges, networks together (can bridge multiple switches or hubs together to allow communication between them)  Allows for different networks to communicate with each other (can bridge different networks together even if hardware is different types)

Gateway ~$40 ($20-$1000+) Same as: HUB Switch Router

Gateway  A gateway provides a path or “gateway” from local area to wide area network  Many networking components actually act as a gateway (HUBS, Switches, Routers) Internet

Firewall ~already own(included in OS and modems, $30-$300) Best for: Internet connected networks (business or personal) large networks (even if no internet connections)

Firewall  Firewalls are integrated in most operating systems (windows includes software firewalls)  Firewalls are included in most network modems (internet provider’s modems have firewalls)  Prevent unauthorized access to you network or personal computer Internet

Wireless AP ~$50 ($20 - $300) Best for: any home network most business environment connecting wireless devices business with non permanent guests or customers

Wireless AP  Allows for wired or wireless connection (not restricted to physical wire connection)  Combination network switch and gateway (can connect computers and devices to each other and also the internet)  Can allow for anyone within certain distant to connect to network (no physical restrictions within rated distance)
