The Incredible Edible Atom Project Due: Tuesday, 11-19-13

Incredible Edible Atom Project You will create two products for this project: An atomic model made of edible objects 2. A summary of the atom you create

Atomic Model Requirements: You will build an edible atom based on the element you are assigned Requirements: all protons, neutrons, and electrons must be made of food materials holding up your atom do not have to be edible (you can use string, wire, plastic, wood, etc.) protons, neutrons, and electrons must be proportional to each other use cheap food/candy (this assignment is not encouraging food or money waste) Your name must be applied somewhere on the model

Details on Atomic Model Pay Attention to Scale – make sure subatomic particles are proportional to each other Example – protons and neutrons are much larger than electrons. So if you’re using a cookie and which should be which? What about an orange and a blueberry? Proton or Neutron Electron

Atom Models It’s likely that you will need to use glue to attach items and models will be handled by multiple hands, so please ……. Don’t eat your model

What materials will you use to create your edible atomic model?

Written Summary of Atomic Model should be approximately 75 words (about 1 page) should be in complete sentences should include: where on the periodic table is your atom found (ex. metals, metalloids, non-metals, noble gases) the properties of your element The products in which it is found What else should be included? atomic name symbol atomic number atomic weight # of electrons # of protons # of neutrons

Rubric for Summary of Model Summary of Atomic Model Summary includes a description of the following for your atom: Element Name 3 points Symbol Atomic Number Atomic Mass How many electron, protons and neutrons does your atom have? Where is your atom located on the periodic table? 4 points What are the properties of your element? (chemical & physical) Summary is complete and thoroughly describes the structure of an atom

Rubric for Atomic Model Edible Atomic Model Electrons, Protons, and Neutrons are: Present 3 points Made of food Proportional Correct Amount Electrons are arranged in the correct energy levels Model is neat and well constructed Your name is on the model 1 point
