Shifting from Research to Prewriting

Now we have finished the research process we are now moving onto the prewriting phase of the essay. Prewriting entails two parts: 1.Essay Brainstorm 2.Outline

Essay Brainstorm The essay brainstorm is a chance for you to organize ideas in a logical way so we can write about it.

Consider the Subtopics: Define, Describe, Evaluate You need to generate your ideas around our three subtopics: 1. Define: What is the topic? 2. Describe: What does the topic look like or what does it do? 3. Evaluate: How can you apply the topic to the outside world? How you can apply this knowledge to make good choices?

Use Ms. Robins Task Sheet to Guide You If you fall into A Category: Define:Topic *Describe: Symptoms Types Evaluate:Treatment Prevention If your fall into the B category: Define: Define Describe: Benefits Drawbacks Effects Evaluate: Action Plan

So, how do I apply this to the Brainstorm? Example 1: Disease If my topic was measles, I need to include six subtopics that include Define, Describe, Evaluate: Six original Subtopics: Definition of Topic Symptoms, Types, Transmission Treatment, Prevention Three Subtopics: Define: Definition of Topic Describe: Symptoms, Types, Transmission Evaluate: Treatment, Prevention

So, how do I apply this to the Brainstorm? Example 2: Disorder If my topic was bipolar disorder, I need to include six subtopics that include Define, Describe, Evaluate: Six original Subtopics: Definition of Topic Treatment, Prevention Three Subtopics: Define: Definition of Topic Describe: Diagnosis, Prevalence, Health Effects Evaluate: Treatment, Prevention

So, how do I apply this to the Brainstorm? Example 3: Activity If my topic was Yoga, I need to include six subtopics that include Define, Describe, Evaluate: Six original Subtopics: Definition of Topic Types, Background/History, Practice, Health Effects, Action Plan Three Subtopics: Define: Definition of Topic Describe: Types, Background/History, Health Effects Evaluate: Practice, Action Plan

The Steps to make your Brainstorm Step 1: Choose Six Subtopics, using Ms. Robins task sheet, that include topics relating to: Define, Describe, Evaluate. Step 2: Take your Six Subtopics group them together into categories of Define, Describe, Evaluate

Task 1 Work with your neighbor and do one of the following: 1.Help each other organize your brainstorm. 2.Give a Tellback how your organized your Brainstorm. 3.Discuss how your Brainstorm can be converted into an Outline.

The Outline Once you have completed your Brainstorm you are ready to create an Outline.

The Organization of Your Essay I.Intro Paragraph: Includes Hook, Thesis, Subtopics II.Subtopic 1: Define Topic III.Subtopic 2: Describe Topic IV.Subtopic 3: Evaluate Topic V.Conclusion: Restate Thesis, Subtopics, and So What?

Whoa…Isnt this essay 4 – 6 pages. How do you make a 5 paragraph essay 4 – 6 pages? Remember our friends: Describe, Define, Evaluate?

Three Subtopics to Six Subtopics. Using your Brainstorm you categorized six subtopics to three. This means each subtopic can be more than one paragraph.

Three Subtopics to Six Subtopics: Example Intro: paragraph 1 Define Topic: paragraph 2 Describe Topic: -Symptoms: paragraph 3 -Diagnosis: paragraph 4 -Risks: paragraph 5 Evaluate Topic: -Treatment: paragraph 6 -Prevention: paragraph 7 Conclusion: paragraph 8

Remember the In-Text Citations Because this essay includes 5 sources, you need 5 in-text citations. In-Text Citations: References to your sources within your essay. MLA Citations: References in your Works Cited Page. *Remember all citations in the essay have to be in your Works Cited Page
