A LL A BOUT F OXS Fox is a common name for many species of omnivorous mammals belonging to the Canidae family. Foxes are small to medium-sized canids (slightly smaller than the median-sized domestic dog), characterized by possessing a long narrow snout, and a bushy tail (or brush).mammalsCanidae canidsdogsnouttail Members of about 37 species are referred to as foxes, of which only 12 species actually belong to the Vulpes genus of "true foxes". By far the most common and widespread species of fox is the red fox (Vulpes vulpes), although various species are found on almost every continent. The presence of fox-like carnivores all over the globe, together with their widespread reputation for cunning, has contributed to their appearance in popular culture and folklore in many cultures around the world: (see also Foxes in culture).speciesVulpesred foxcontinentcarnivorespopular culturefolkloreFoxes in culture

Foxs Scientific Classifications

W HAT DO F OXES L OOK L IKE ? Foxes usually have red/brown fur, which can vary in colouration, but they can also have a mixture of red/brown, black and silver fur. They have a long bushy tail, tipped with white. The backs of the ears are black, as are part of the legs. Foxes have a slender muzzle, with white fur on the upper lip, and sometimes black teardrop-type marks near the eyes. The chest is often white. They can be between cm in length, minus the tail, which adds another 30-50cm. They stand between cm tall and weigh between 6 and 10 kg.

W HERE ARE F OXS F OUND ? Foxes are typically found in woodland and open country, but their presence in urban and built-up areas is increasing. Foxes usually live in family groups comprising of a male (dog), a dominant female (vixen) and other subordinate vixens, who may be the young of the previous year. They defend a territory which, in the country, can be quite large –anything from 25 to 5000 acres - and may overlap the territories of other fox groups. Urban fox territories tend to be much smaller, usually revolving around the most plentiful supply of food. Foxes usually shelter and breed below ground in an “earth” or “den”. They prefer well-drained soil, and will often use the burrows previously left by rabbits or badgers. Urban foxes often live beneath sheds and outbuildings, and have even been known to live under the floorboards of houses.

W HAT DO F OXS E AT ? Foxes eat a wide range of foodstuffs, including small mammals, birds, including their eggs, reptiles, insects, earthworms, fruits and vegetables. Urban foxes have become particularly adept at scavenging for food in our waste bins and bags, and will sometimes fight small pets for scraps of pet food. There is a widespread myth that foxes kill other smaller mammals for the fun of it, since they often leave a carcass after the kill. However, this is not the case. A fox will kill more than it needs to eat, but will come back for the carcass some time later, and will store it, usually by burying it in the ground. Whilst foxes predominantly only venture out at night in the search for food, it is not uncommon to see an urban fox during daylight hours.

W HAT THEY EAT
