An elective for gifted high school students

Create an individual learning experience. Design your own course.

Do you have motivation, initiative, and self-discipline?  Outside the box of regular classes  But inside the guidelines of the Gwinnett County Public Schools Academic Knowledge and Skills

Choose a topic that is not currently taught in your high school. For example, Spanish classes are available in your school. Arabic classes are not available. You could study Arabic but not Spanish in Directed Study. Design your own course.

 Narrow the topic.  Find a mentor teacher (if needed).  Evaluate resources.  Create a contract.  Select ten learning goals. Align with AKS.  Select a product for each goal.  Establish due dates.  Complete project.  Make a presentation.  You may have to provide your own resources, depending upon the topic.

Examples of contract topics  Organic chemistry  Advanced editing (broadcast)  Contemporary Latin American poetry  Integrated web design ( for BHS website )  History of competitive swimming  Introduction to Russian  Great Books (individualized reading list)  Contemporary French Cuisine  History and Market of Comic Books  College, Scholarship, and Career Options  Fashion Design: history, careers, collection.  Science Fair projects (varied topics)

Will your idea fly?  Mrs. Collins or visit room A102.   Present your idea for a study topic.  Will it fit the AKS in a specific subject? Let’s find one.  Ask Mrs. Collins to sign registration form.
