Warm-Up8/31/12  Chapter 1, problem #68.  A student is planning a science fair project called, “Does Temperature Affect How High a Basketball Can Bounce?”  Based on the title, what are the manipulated and responding variables?  Name at least 2 factors that would need to be kept constant during the experiment?

1.1 Chemistry  Chemistry – study of matter and its changes.  Matter – anything with mass and volume.  Every THING is made of matter, so chemistry affects all aspects of life and most natural events.

Areas of Chemistry  5 (five) traditional areas of chemistry:  Organic Chemistry  Inorganic Chemistry  Biochemistry  Analytical Chemistry  Physical Chemistry

Pure vs. Applied Chemistry  Pure Chemistry – the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake.  Applied Chemistry – research directed towards a practical goal or application.  Pure research can lead directly to an application.  An application can exist before research is done to explain how it works.

1.2 Chemistry Far & Wide  Macroscopic – the world of objects large enough to be seen with the naked eye.  Microscopic – the world of objects that can be seen only under magnification.

1.3 Alchemy  Early chemistry (8 th century)  Arose independently around the world  Practical side: Developed tools & techniques for working with chemicals.  Beakers, tongs, funnels, mortar & pestle  Separate mixtures, purify chemicals  Mystical side: Sought “perfection”  Gold = “perfect metal”; tried changing lead into gold and failed  Failed to provide logical explanations for changes in matter
