Helping your child with KS1 SATs.

Towards the end of Key Stage 1, Year 2 children take the KS1 SATs. (Statutory Assessment Tests). At Malcolm Sargent School we carry out these assessments during the month of May.

Expectations End of Key Stage 1 The national expectation is for a year 2 child to achieve a level 2b or above at the end of year 2. Levels are progressive 1c, then 1b, then 1a and then onto 2c, 2b and 2a followed by level 3

Reading Task The task assesses the child’s ability to read a book aloud with accuracy, fluency and discuss his or her understanding of the text. Teachers are required to use a book with which the child is not familiar.

Reading test A reading test for level 2 will consist of a story and one or more other texts with questions for children to answer on each page of a single booklet. The test will award level 2 and provide grades C-A at this level. The level 2 test provides additional and complementary information to the reading task. The test assesses the child’s ability to read independently and respond in writing to comprehension questions. A reading test for level 3, which will be based on a story booklet and a separate information text, together with one question booklet for children to complete.

Example of Level 2

Mathematics An optional task for mathematics at level 1, which can be used with children judged to be working towards or within level 1 in mathematics as a whole. ·There will be 2 separate tests for mathematics, one each for levels 2 and 3. Children deemed to be working in level 3 or achieving 2A on the level 2 test will take the level 3 test, if the teacher decides this is appropriate. These tests will provide grades C-A at level 2 or 3.

Writing Two writing tasks, which will cover levels 1 to 3. They will provide grades C-A at level 2. the task assesses the child’s ability to communicate meaning in writing, to use punctuation and spelling accurately and write legibly. There will be one longer task of approximately 45 minutes and shorter task of approximately 30 minutes.

Spelling A spelling test for levels 1-3 which should be administered with the rest of the tests. This will not provide a separate levelled result for Spelling, but will contribute towards the child’s level in writing.

How can I help my child? At home, encourage your child to read for about 20 minutes each day. Find opportunities for your child to use numbers in everyday situations. Try to keep up to date with what your child is learning at school and talk positively about it with them. Your child will be ready to learn if they come to school well rested and feeling positive about the day ahead.

Outcomes of the SATs Information about your child’s achievements will be included with your end of year report. This will include Teacher Assessment: everyday achievements of pupils Test results: achievement in their tasks and test

How we use the results The children’s achievements are celebrated and help their next teacher to build on what they already know. If less than 2b … our school has a policy of providing intervention support in Year 3. If your child achieves a level 3 their next teacher is aware of their potential and will provide sufficient challenge to ensure ongoing progress.

To sum up National tests give useful information to your child’s teachers. It’s important to keep these in perspective, they are just one of the ways the school works out how well your child is doing. The children have been well prepared for these tests and we would value your support in encouraging them to do their best.
