The Czech Republic is situated in Central Europe. It is a landlocked country. The Czech Republic borders on Germany in the west, Poland in the north, Austria in the south and Slovakia in the east.
The Czech Republic is surrounded by mountains. In the north we can find the mountains called - Krušné Mountains, Krkonoše Mountains, Jizerské Mountains and Orlické Mountains. The mountains create a natural border between the Czech Republic on one side and Germany and Poland on the other. In Krkonoše Mountains there is the highest peak – Sněžka. In the mountains there are popular destinations for winter holidaymakers.

In the south there are Šumava Mountains. Šumava Mountains are covered with charming woods and swamps. There are two glacial lakes – Černé Lake and Čertovo Lake. In Šumava Mountains we can find Lipno Dam, the largest water reservoir in the Czech Republic. One of the most important rivers the Vltava rises in Šumava Mountains. There is the primeval forest Boubín too. In the south-east along the Czech-Slovak border there are Jeseníky Mountains and Beskydy Mountains.

In South Moravia we can find the Moravian Karst with the Macocha Abyss and a system of caves and an underground river called the Punkva. In the north of the Czech Republic there is the Český ráj – the Bohemian Paradise with numerous hiking and biking trails.
The largest rivers of the Czech Republic are the Labe, the Vltava and the Odra. The rivers are important for freight traffic. The Labe rises in Krkonoše Mountains and flows to the North Sea. On the river Vltava there are several dams – e.g. Lipno Dam, Orlík Dam or Slapy Dam. The dams are very popular among tourists. Southern Bohemia is famous for its ponds – the largest ponds are Svět and Rožmberk. The ponds were made for commercial fish breeding. In Southern Bohemia we can find a lot of holiday resorts. There are a lot of mineral springs and spa towns in the Czech Republic. The most attractive spa towns are Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně and Fratiškovy Lázně.

Try to guess the name of that man – he is a folklore mountain spirit, which lives in Krkonoše mountains. He is called - "Lord of the Mountains". In legends he is a capricious giant. With good people he is friendly, he teaches them medicine a gives presents. If someone derides him however, his revenge is severe.

In northern Bohemia near the town Most brown coal is mined and in northern Moravia near the town Ostrava black coal is mined. There are also deposits of uranium and mercury in the Czech Republic. The country is dependent on imported oil and natural gas.
Mechanical engineering, chemical industry, textile industry, pharmaceutical industry, food processing industry play an important role in the Czech Republic. There are a lot of world-famous companies in the Czech Republic – Škoda Auto is one of the largest manufacturers in Central Europe. Chemical industry plays an important role in Ústí/ Labem, Neratovice or Kralupy/ Vltavou.

Glass and porcelain industry have a long tradition in Dubí, Nový Bor, Karlovy Vary and Jablonec/ Nisou. In Jablonec/Nisou is also produced beautiful jewellery.

Agriculture is quite important for the Czech Republic. Czech farmers keep fowl, pigs, cattle and sheep there. People grow wheat, potatoes, sugar beets and hops there. There are a lot of orchards and vineyards in the Czech Republic and brewing has a long tradition there. The most famous breweries we can find in Plzeň or České Budějovice.
