Pivoting Data: Looking at Your Data in a Different Way 6 Understanding what a PivotTable is Creating a basic PivotTable Expanding a PivotTable Displaying your data graphically by using PivotCharts Stations Along the Way

Introducing PivotTables PivotTables enable you to manipulate large amounts of data more easily Use a PivotTable to view data in a more compressed and logical way Pivot the data to quickly summarize it in different ways You can create a PivotChart that is based on a PivotTable

Creating a PivotTable Prepare the data for the PivotTable The data cannot include blank lines All columns must include headers Data must be consistent Drag fields for the report to areas at the bottom of the PivotTable Field List Move fields to different areas of Field List to change the view of the report

Expanding PivotTables You can add or change summary data in a PivotTable – for example, summarize data by using averages instead of totals You can base PivotTables on any formula or function you choose You also can apply a numeric format to summary data

Creating a PivotChart You can create a PivotChart that is based on an existing PivotTable They show PivotTable data visually You can use any standard chart type Select additional chart options in the PivotChart Filter Pane: Axis fields Legend fields Values

Discussion Questions When should you use a PivotTable? What is the relationship between a PivotTable and a regular table? What are the three rules for organizing data to be used in a PivotTable? What is a data cube? What is the relationship between value cells and header cells in a PivotTable?

Discussion Questions (cont.) What is the easiest way to add fields to a PivotTable? How do you change the row and column headers in a PivotTable? What are the most common formulas used in PivotTables? What is a PivotChart? Can all chart types be used to create a PivotChart?
