Struggling? Next steps Q & A

Program Benefits: High School/College Dual Credit Program Students can earn college credit that will transfer to all public 4-year colleges in Washington. Students get an opportunity to do college course work without having to leave home

Possible Issues: Some students earn lower grades that can hurt their chances for college admission Some students jeopardize their high school graduation status by failing required classes Credit Transferability: You may need to check on transferring particular courses to some independent colleges in Washington Contact the college if you plan to attend an out-of- state college to see if they will accept the credit

Running Start Possible Issues (cont): High school semester vs. Clark quarter High school semester vs. Clark quarter Note: Most school vacations DO NOT match up with Clarks Winter and Spring breaks Look at college calendar on the web (click onQuick Links, then Calendar) Look at college calendar on the web (click onQuick Links, then Calendar) Cost Cost Fees Fees Transportation Transportation

PARENTS SHOULD REMEMBER They do not have access to student records (nor does the high school) Clark is a college and is an adult environment No special allowances are made because of the students age Instructors arent required to monitor attendance

Is Running Start right for me? Consider: 1. You will miss some or all of your high school experience and time with your friends 2. You will need to be more responsible: 1. Instructors different than HS teachers 1.No contact with parents 2.Less lenient 2. Homework doesnt always have deadlines 3. It is more difficult to keep up with what is happening at the high school– dates/times/events… 0

Begin with the End in mind What is your purpose in taking classes at Clark? AA/AS Degree or ? College admission/transfer ? Complete high school courses ? All the above?

How Do Credits Work? 1.The number of hours you go to school per week is basically the number of credits (for a 5-credit class, you attend every day for an hour or 2 days a week for 2 1/2 hours…) 2.Every 5 credits at Clark College is equal to 1 (full year of) credit at the high school

How Many Classes/Credits Should I Take? For Full-Time Running Start Students: * credits is considered a full load * 15 credits is the maximum for full-time Running Start attendance without paying for tuition.
