Tool Identification Each of the tools on these slides are common tools found in most homes, or are pieces of equipment we will specifically use for our metal project. How many of these can you name? Lets find out!

Tool #1

Tool #1 = Needle Nose Pliers Other Information: These are a Common Household Tool. Most homes will have a pair. They are used for gripping small objects.

Tool #2

Tool #2 = Claw Hammer Claw Other Information: The claw portion of a claw hammer is used mostly for removing nails.

Tool #3

Tool #3 = Hobby Knife Other Information: This kind of knife is used for cutting small delicate items such as the film we use for screen printing.

Tool #4

Tool #4 = Abrasive Paper Other Information: Often referred to as ‘sandpaper’, (there are many different types and sizes of particles that can be glued to the backing paper in order to smooth the intended materials)

Tools #5 and #6

Tool #5 = Ink Knife Tool #6 = Squeegee Other Information: The ink knife is used to apply ink to the squeegee, the squeegee is used then to apply the ink to a screen during screen printing.

Tool #7

Tool #7 = Tape Measure Other Information: A tape measure is a form of flexible ruler. The earliest uses were for tailoring (sewing).

Tools #8 and #9 #8 #9

#8 = Phillips Head Screwdriver #9 = Flathead Screwdriver #8 #9 Other Information: A phillips head screwdriver is used for screws and bolts with a “+” pattern in them: Other Information: A flathead screwdriver is used with screws or bolts that have a slotted pattern in them:

Tool #10

Tool #10 = Scissors Other Information: A basic cutting tool, the earliest record of scissors is from Ancient Egypt, over 2,000 years ago!

Tool #11

Tool #11 = Metal Scribes This one is most like the kind we will use on the 8 th grade car project.

Tool #12 These go in this tool. They are about 1 ½” long.

Tool #12 = Riveting Tool The blind rivets go into the riveting tool, and also through the hole drilled into metal pieces to be riveted together. When the tool is used, it basically smashes the rivets into a permanent “button” holding the materials together. “blind rivets” or “pop-rivets”

Tool #13

Tool #13 = Spirit Level Other Information: This tool is used to determine if an item is perfectly horizontal (“level”) or vertical (“plumb”). The term “spirit” refers to the liquid in the tube – which usually a form of alcohol or “spirit”.

Tool #14

Tool #14 = Ruler Other Information: Originally called a “rule” the more common term for this measuring device is now “ruler”.

Tool #15

Tool #15 = Allen Wrench Other Information: Also known as a “Hex Key” these are used with screws or bolts with a hexagonal tip:

Tool #16

Tool #16 = File Other Information: Used to “file” or smooth the edges of a material (like wood or metal)

Tool #17

Tool #17 = Safety Glasses

Tool #18

Tool #18 = Masking Tape Other Information: Masking tape was invented in 1925 by an auto engineer Richard Drew: its original use was for marking off areas where auto body paint wasn’t wanted.

Tool #19

Tool #19 = Compass Other Information: Most commonly used to draw “perfect” circles.

Tool #20

Tool #20 = Vice Grips

Tool #21

Tool #21 = Chisel and Punch Set Other Information: Chisels remove material in strips or chunks. Metal Punches make dents in metal, usually to mark a drilling spot.

Tool #22

Tool #22 = Drill Bits Other Information: Drill bits are used with a hand drill or a drill press to drill holes in material. Power Drill Drill press

Tool #23

Tool #23 = Mallet Other Information: Mallets are generally used when a “softer” strike is desired (compared to a metal hammer) When you need to strike an object without denting it or damaging it.

Tool #24

Tool #24 = Box and Pan Brake Other Information: A “brake” is a machine used to bend/fold metal. Ours is also called a “finger brake” because it has movable clamping sections called “fingers” Each of these silver pieces is a moveable clamp section called a “finger”. Each of these silver bolts is holding one clamping finger in place.

Tool #25

Tool #25 = Tin Snips Other Information: Tin snips are essentially scissors for cutting sheet metal.
