Video and Performance Analysis in the Coaching Process For Goalkeeping Coaches and Goalkeepers

Andy Elleray Author of ‘Scientific Approaches to Goalkeeping in Football’ Focus on video and performance analysis specifically for goalkeeping at all levels.

Andy Elleray Coach – Analyst – Sports Scientist??? Performance Analysis is a key part of the coaching process so each coach should be an analyst in some capacity.

Introduction So I think…. Due to the influx of ‘Soccernomics’ or ‘Moneyball’ opinions and importance placed on performance analysis have never been greater. Statistics and data more readily available Media place great significance on analysis Figures rule comparisons of players How does all this help the average coach???

Introduction Perceptions of Performance Analysis? All numbers Only for elite coaches and teams Expensive and hard to use software Hard to use in training and matches Why would I need to use it? Numbers without context are useless… Video is a more valuable, and as a coach how can you utilise this for monitoring, development and performance enhancement……

Talking Points Why use performance analysis: –In general –Goalkeeping –Feedback Examples in different settings: –Clubs –Ages –Environments How to use as a goalkeeping coach: –Hardware/Software –The iPad –Examples from the conference

Why use performance analysis?

Why use performance analysis: In General Provides evidence of performance – perceived vs actual Decision making of the coach Positive re-enforcement (especially for younger athletes) Technical/Tactical/Psychological investigation

In General Key in the coaching process Plays a part in all of the phases - video recall (F,O,E) -planning sessions (P) -Evaluating performances Why use performance analysis:

Goalkeeping Investigate technical and biomechanical movements Enhance understanding of the roles Identify strengths and weaknesses in goalkeeper Feedback in many ways to the players you’re working with Re-enforce coaching points Why use performance analysis:

Feedback Relatively easy to obtain footage… The key is how you then relay this information and set the learning environment. –Questioning –Explaining –Comparison –Demonstrate –Inspire – shows where I want to be… Why use performance analysis:

Feedback Why use performance analysis:

Augmented feedback Actual vs Desired Key for a coach to show how they’d like a certain skill performed. Why use performance analysis:

Feedback – when??? Immediate – breaks/build into session –allows for a swift look into errors or performance enhancement Retrospective – after session/next few days/next session –Allows for a more detailed and structured review after reflection Dictated by resources most of the time… Why use performance analysis:

Examples in different settings

A brief look into some of the setups I’ve been involved in… Coach support Setups (coach, analyst, explain setups camera etc) Where and when to include video analysis How environments change bearing in mind age and ability

Clubs Biomechanics Match actions Distribution analysis Assist decision making for the coach Create reports/reviews on GKs Training and match feedback Examples in different settings

Statistics Opta, ProZone, Amisco data – used at the top level but not at youth level Within goalkeeping a lot of statistics are not useable because there is no context…….too many variables ‘Johnny your save ratio so far this season is 70%’……. -Is this good? Comparison? -What type of shots? – how did they actually deal with them? -How where the other players involved? – Weather conditions? -Where were these shots taken? - GK dealt with appropriately? -Distribution

Distribution Analysis Overall team statistical show how much distribution goalkeepers do….this  Helps shape physical programmes  Helps shape training practices – match action research  Helps to identify patterns of play, tactics and frequent actions (e.g. playing out) Clubs Track all distribution Where and how Won – retention Have video if possible – where team pressing/standing off etc

Distribution Analysis Example

Match + GK GK ActionsWonLost%RetainedNot% Barcelona (AE) %11192% Real Madrid (AE) %201067% Ajax (AE) %22582% Total %531677% Simplistic version – book shows how to get very useable data Book shows all the calculations for the main system – will explain

Match View Picks up commonly neglected areas Off the ball involvement Starting positions Communication and Organisation

Ages Phase of development effects structure 9-11: snippets – buy in – why??? 12-15: enhancing development 16-18: in-depth – refining skills Examples in different settings

Environment Grassroots –Show videos before or after the session –Focus on ½ GKs per session – more in-depth Elite Youth –Focus on small areas –Help shape practices –Build into regular practices (becomes habit) –Reflect and review Examples in different settings

How to use as a goalkeeping coach

A few examples of how to use analysis in everyday practice Hardware/Software Setups Examples

Hardware/Software A variety of different ways in which to utilise performance analysis Camera Laptop iPad Coding Clipping/Tagging How to use as a goalkeeping coach

Setups - Training Camera – involved in session Camera/Laptop – involved in session Tripod/Code – not involved Freehand iPad – not involved Can stand back and code events for immediate feedback * Involved means physically serving or not How to use as a goalkeeping coach

Setups – Matches iPad to film examples and code Setup a camera to upload At times use examples during breaks (half time/in between quarters for positive re- enforcement View: behind goal, side on, elevated, level with penalty area How to use as a goalkeeping coach

Video Aid Detailed section in the book Ideal – before sessions, games ……Inspiration!!! Know as ‘Vicarious Experience’ Different environments breed different feedback, and open up discussion How to use as a goalkeeping coach

In Summary A very valuable tool that a coach can include in a goalkeeping session/development plan/curriculum Can fit into a variety of different environments – tailoring to the groups needs A potential need for further educating on performance analysis tools, feedback types and structuring for coaches within coach education – not just football but sport in general
