Good Morning! Upper-Intermediate

Some Questions Do you enjoy watching films? Why / Why not? What type of film do you enjoy watching? Drama, crime, thriller, action etc. Do you have a favourite film? If yes, which one?

My Favourite Film My favourite film is the History Boys, which is a British film inspired by the stage play of the same name. The stage play was written by Alan Bennett, who has been writing drama for many years. The film, whose star cast includes James Corden and Dominic Cooper, has won many awards, including an Olivier award. The storyline is quite simple but I like it because it reminds me of my school years.

Your Favourite Film Choose a film – your favourite one if you have a favourite film – and produce a couple of sentences telling me about it. If you aren’t sure what to write, you could cover these areas: - Film title - Why you like it - Who stars in it - What is it about?

Practice 1 Complete exercise 1 with one of the following relative pronouns: who, which, whose, where, when Some of the relative pronouns have a common before them, some of them don’t – why? Defining Relative Clause – no comma Non-Defining Relative Clause - comma

1.Which 2.Which 3.Which 4.Who 5.Who 6.Which 7.Which 8.When 9.Which 10.Who 11.Whose 12.Where

Practice 2 Exercise 2: bring the two sentences together using a relative clause – think about whether the clause is defining or non-defining and about the use of commas. Let’s do the first one together as an example.

Answers 1.In The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Brad Pitt plays a man who lives his life backwards. 2.Megastar Zac Efron, who shot to fame in High School Music, gives an emotional and mature performance in his latest film. 3.Invictus is a story about leadership and forgiveness at a critical period when Nelson Mandela had just become president of South Africa. 4.The film Star Trek was based on a popular TV series which was watched around the world.

5.This film, which is Daniel Craig’s second appearance as James Bond, is directed by Marc Forster. 6.In The Pianist, Adrian Brody plays a Jewish refugee who is a famous Polish piano player. 7.Lost in Translation is a film about two Americans in a Tokyo hotel, where they meet and form an unusual band there. 8.The Hurt Locker, which is a gripping story about the insanity and foolishness of war, was made in Jordan.

Language Exercise 1, which is about the film Let The Right One In, is full of nice phrases and words for describing films, for example: is played by, poignant… Read it again and highlight any phrases or words you think are useful when talking about films.

Your Favourite Film Go back to what you wrote earlier about your favourite film and think about the following, making any changes or adding if necessary: - Have you used the relative pronouns correctly? -Have you used the commas correctly? -Can you add any nice phrases or words from the ones you found?
