BODY MASS INDEX

BMI CHARTS Several charts have been develop for use in assessing the BMI of clients: The chart below provides a quick and easy way to determine an individual’s BMI the following instructions below: Measure the individual’s weight (in kg) and height (in cm) Find the point on the chart where both the weight and height intersect The BMI is the number indicated on the dashed line closest to this point. For example, an individual who weighs 58 kg and who height is 162 cm has a BMI of approximately 22

Example 1 : Your client is 185 cm tall and weighs 60 kg. Calculation:185cm/100 = 1.85 m x 1.85 m = 3.42m 2 BMI = 60 kg = 17.5 kg/m m 2 Client is underweight and probably nutrient deficient. Counsel the client to increase energy and protein intake to gain weight and help client manage nutrition related symptoms.

Example 2: Your client is 150cm tall and weighs 60 kg Calculation: 150cm/100 = 1.50m x 1.50m =2.25m 2 BMI = 60kg = 26.7kg/m m 2 Your client is overweight.

Example 3: Your client is 165cm tall and weighs 60kg. Calculation : 165cm/100 = 1.65m x 1.65m =2.72m 2 BMI = 60kg kg/m m 2 Your client has normal weight.
