Modernizing P.M. Programs Through technologies and communication At Chicago’s Navy Pier September 29, 2010 By: Halsey King Member SAE/NFPA

Modernizing Your P.M. Program  The goal of P.M. Programs  Changing management  Changing Technologies  Changing Benefits  Moving forward

P.M. Basic Goals “ To provide safe, clean and reliable vehicles in operation at the proper level of fiscal control” U.S. DOT / FTA

Changing Management  Self help book’s of recent years include;  How to sell anything to anybody  The one minute manager  Time management and cost  In search of excellence  These instructional aids taught managers to;  Keep their eye on the market  Run a tighter organization  Do more with less and,  Don’t fix it – if it ain't broken

Today’s Self Help Books Are All About  Lease options  Changing materials especially Fibers, Nano and H/S Steel  Changing engine technologies and platforms  Teaming with the workforce  Just-in-time inventory management  Running it like a business  Value added partnering  Innovation in a changing world  Changing vehicle fleet lease contracts  Smarter vehicles and systems  Less emissions and greater durability  Smarter managers  Changing business climate When Translated into Viable Exercises we can see;

Changing Technologies Ten to Twenty years ago we were discussing; Super slippery “silicone oils” Long term effects of asbestos to parts and people LED lights and systems of the future Following the “electron” Thirty years ago we were discussing; Make or buy studies The coming shortage of mechanics Life cycle parts Low sulfur and low led fuels Did we not survive all of these impacts? Did they not make us better fleet managers?

Changing Technologies cont… Real Technology coming at you include; Hydrogen fuel cells Turbines with Lithium-ion batteries Selective Catalytic Reduction Lithium Titanate cells Full electric steering, brakes, engine systems Will these new technologies reduce the size of your carbon footprint? If so, at what cost and impact? We will look at these during Bus Con next year.

Changing Benefits Less pollution Longer engine life (“million mile club”) Improved retread on tires Longer bus life (“half million mile partransit Pearl City”) Less parts to build, inventory, purchase Better parts inventories management Smarter technicians (through ASE and others) More peer groups on-line Move involvement (through internet)

Moving Forward “ If you failed to keep your eye on the market – while trying to run a tighter organization, when all of those things that were broken you didn’t fix, because you were sincerely trying to do more with less.” Go back to management 101; Practice leadership and team building. Re-align your department at the 30,000 foot level… gain a new perspective. Get involved with trade originations, your peer groups, and events outside of your fences. Learn to be as pro-active with your resources as you are with your P.M. schedule and philosophy. It’s about the money. Join committees, write articles, support your staff, encourage professionalism. Connect with media outlets and you will find that the world will come to you. Use your peer connection as part of the “new technology evaluation”.
