For Long Term Water Security SARDAR SAROVAR (NARMADA) PROJECT Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited Dr. M.B. Joshi GM (Tech. & Coor.)

Water – the Elixir of Life

A means to address Water Scarcity Regional Water Transfer

Sardar Sarovar Project – for Long Term Water Security 4

Mission of SSP Harnessing the untapped waters of the Narmada for survival of millions of people and environmentally sound sustainable development of the western India by providing the essence of life-Water and Energy.

Award of the Tribunal Madhya Pradesh 65.18% (18.25 MAF) Gujarat 32.14% (9.0 MAF) Maharashtra 0.89% (0.25 MAF) Rajasthan 1.79% (0.50 MAF) Madhya Pradesh 57% ( MW) Gujarat 16% (232 MW) Maharashtra 27% ( MW) Water (28 MAF)Power (1450 MW)

Manmade Perennial Rivers World’s largest canal network to convey 11.7 BCM of water every year

Type of Canal Total Length in Km. Completed Length in Km. % completed Main Canal 458 km Completed and Operationalized Since 2008 Branch Canal Distributaries Minor Sub-Minor Total Status of SSP Canal Network

9 Conveying water over distances upto 700 km, and even by lifting 71m for Saurashtra and 55m for Kachchh 11.7 BCM From Dam to Farm

10 Private land acquired from 86,500 farmers through Consent award 13,000 Ha Land Acquisition through Consent Route Prompt & Transparent Payment at Jantri rate

Works Contracts 700+ Locations 8239 Crore SSP – One of the largest construction projects Large scale construction of canal network to bring additional 1 M Ha under irrigation

12 Irrigation Potential (Hectares) created till date by constructing canal network upto Minors 7.33 Lakh Irrigation Irrigation facilities to 1.8 million hectare of land serving 1 million farmers

13 In addition to 118 towns, Number of villages already covered in the Narmada based Drinking Water Supply schemes 7409 Drinking Water Drinking water to 9633 villages and 131 urban centres

14 Million Units of electricity generated till date Hydro Power  River Bed Power House – 1200 MW  Six Units of Francis Reversible Turbines  Penstock Diameter 7.6 m  Canal Head Power House – 250 MW  Five Units of Kaplan Turbines  Penstock Diameter 6.7 m  Both the Power Houses fully operational from June 2006 onwards  Even at Rs per Unit, Rs Crore (~1 Billion USD) benefits against the Project Cost of Rs Crore) and O&M Cost of 155 Crore so far

15 Gujarat’s water saved due to generation of electricity and saving (Million Cubic Meter) % Water & Energy Interlinkages  29,700 Million kWh generated so far  About 96,300 Million kWh saved due to reduced groundwater pumping

16 Recirculation of valuable water for generating peaking power 1200 MW Contribution of Sardar Sarovar Project  RBPH will not be redundant even during the final stage when Madhya Pradesh would be utilising its entire MAF of water.  250 MW available from CHPH as peaking power when the 9.5 MAF water will be passed through the CHPH

Harnessing the Potential of Small/Micro Hydel

19 Benefits from the project 1.6 million units of power to be generated annually 9 million liters Water to be conserved Less Algae Growth in the canal water 6 acres lAND Innovative Idea: Cover the canal with Solar Panels to Minimize evaporation from canal Produce power using solar panels as the cover Produce eco-friendly power Save Land Pilot Project of Solar PV (1 MW) on Canal Top

20 Saving of about 60 to 90 million cubic meter per annum due to reduced evaporation loss. Equivalent to 96 to 144 Million Units of electricity to fetch this much groundwater 2 GW Assessment of Present Potential Type of Canal Total Length in Km. Completed Length in Km. 30% Length having potential for Solar Power Generation Main Canal Branch Canal Distributaries Total km Top width of these canals range from 110 m to 10 m, can facilitate installation of Solar PV Panels with an installed capacity of 2,000 MW. Such installation on canal top can thus cover a water surface area of about 50 to 60 million square meter. For different types of canals, the potential can be assessed as under :

Awards and Recognition : Enertia Award for “ Project Management in power generation” : Enertia Award for High Power Generation (43.5% higher compared to ) 2012 : CIDC Vishwakarma Award - Best project in Power
