CHILD STUDIES Task 2 Healthy Eating for kids

 Practical task  Based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines 1, 2, 3 & 5  3 parts – action plan, practical, evaluation  Cooking week 6 and week 8  Cooking will be in pairs  Food order will be done in week 7  Need to pay your subject cost $30

What do you have to do?  Working in pairs, design a healthy menu for one day that is suitable for a child 4-8 and will not contribute to obesity  Present your menu as a poster or powerpoint  Cook the main meal from your menu

What else do you need to do?  Prepare an action plan which includes:  Factors that influenced what you decided to put in your menu (nutritional needs, likes dislikes, culture, lifestyle, etc.)  What you decided to cook for the main meal  Why you decided on this meal  A plan for the practical – what are the main steps you and your partner have to do to plan, prepare and serve the meal

And….  When you finish the practical task write an evaluation. Include these three sections.  Reflect on the processes you used and the results you achieved. Include your decision making processes, your management processes and the final result of your practical.  Could you make any improvements? How?  How did technology help you in this task? Do you think technology can help parents to make better decisions about their children’s health? How ?

The Australian Dietary Guidelines give advice on eating for health and wellbeing. They’re called dietary guidelines because it’s your usual diet that influences your health. Based on the latest scientific evidence, they describe the best approach to eating for a long and healthy life  Guideline 1 To achieve and maintain a healthy weight, be physically active and choose amounts of nutritious food and drinks to meet your energy needs  Guideline 2 Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods from these five groups every day  Guideline 3 Limit intake of foods containing saturated fat, added salt, added sugars and alcohol  Guideline 4 Encourage, support and promote breastfeeding  Guideline 5 Care for your food; prepare and store it safely The Australian Dietary Guidelines

 Infants, children and teenagers have special dietary needs because they are growing and developing. They need more energy because they are playing and being active. How to go about it  Start by doing the Balance Game calculators/food-balance  Play around with your menu choices to achieve a balanced menu.  Make sure you have the correct amount from each food group – keep an eye on the dials.  Take screen shots of your menu choices to include in your menu presentation

Choose a main meal recipe for the day.  What menu choices did you include for dinner?  Put these into the advanced search function on taste.com.autaste.com.au  Search by ingredient and click the main ingredients you chose for your dinner  Choose a recipe that you would like to cook

Analyse your recipe  Before you finally choose this recipe, you need to make sure it is healthy and meets your child’s needs  You do this by using Food Choices to check the nutritional value of the meal  If it doesn’t you will need to change some things – check with your teacher on what to change  When you are sure it’s a great choice, do your food order and it to  Follow the food order guidelines
