Federal Program: SNAP-Ed

SNAP-Ed Goal To improve the likelihood that persons eligible for SNAP will make healthy food choices within a limited budget and choose physically active lifestyles consistent with the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) food guidance.

Program Behavioral Focus 1.Make half your plate fruits and vegetables, at least half your grains whole grains, and switch to fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products. 2.Increase physical activity and reduce time spent in sedentary behaviors as part of a healthy lifestyle. 3.Maintain appropriate calorie balance during each stage of life.

SNAP-Ed History 1988 – started through the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension SNAP-Ed offered in all 50 states 2010 – Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 – Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Grant

SNAP-Ed Today Emphasis on obesity prevention in addition to nutrition education. Education is still learner-centered and behaviorally focused. Approaches also include environmental and policy level interventions. National, State, and local coordination

State Program: Family Nutrition Program

Family Nutrition Program Offered in over 30 counties through UF/IFAS Extension. Over 100,000 Floridians participate each year. Face-to-face education with collaborative efforts to increase healthy choices within communities.

UF/IFAS Extension Morrill Act of 1862 – Established land grant universities Morrill Act of 1890 – Historically Black colleges and universities Smith Lever Act of 1914 – Started federal funding of Cooperative Extension
