Utilizing Electronic Communication and the Digital World to Replace Traditional Instruction at the College and Implications for K – 12 Education

Change 10/9/20152 Eric Clapton

Pre-Assessment Do you own a personal computer? Do you own an I-Pod or other MP3 Player? Do you own a Personal Digital Assistant? Do you own a cell phone and do you “text”? What percent of your students own the above items? What percent of the above items are you using for instructional purposes with your students? Are you multi-tasking RIGHT NOW?

What percent of your students multi-task in class? How many times do you stop, start or repeat your instruction? How many hours a day do you believe your students are engaged in communication via technology? How many hours a day are you engaged with a single student?

Possibilities Why can’t we use all of the technology discussed in the Pre-Assessment to support and reinforce your instruction, whether it is Higher Education or K – 12 Education? You can even make MONEY on your work! ◦Revver Video Sharing NetworkRevver Video Sharing Network BUT we must change our paradigm

Electronic Communication and the Digital World – Web 2.0 These possibilities all exist in the virtual world of Electronic Communications including Web 2.0 Applications and many of these do not require new funds.

Philosophical Issues Honesty and Integrity Technology Availability Technology Personal Knowledge Technology Infrastructure Educators Role as a Model Communication Relationship / Modern Day Pen Pals Procedure and Process – Use of Brain Power before “Clicking Power”

Electronic Communication and the Digital World – Web 2.0 Teaching Virtually (doing it well) is NOT easier or less time consuming Incorporation of Cooperative Learning can be a Major Plus with on-line instructionCooperative Learning Use of Multiple Methods and Applications

Change 10/9/20159 Have we heard about change lately?

Electronic Communication and the Digital World – Web 2.0 Web 2.0 is not a “thing” It is not a website There is NO www. Site but there is a site that provides a listing of Web 2.0 Applications Paradigm shift Remember NCLB 2014 and parental choice; if you work at the Higher Education level does the term helicopter parent sound familiar?

Electronic Communication and the Digital World – Web 2.0 Increase in Home Schooling continues to be a challenge and a loss of students in K – 12 Schools Tremendous increase in on-line college programs Check the statistics on some of the well known names of On-Line Universities Then look into traditional univerisities and find the number of on-line courses

Michael Wesch Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology Kansas State University

Electronic Communication and the Digital World – Web 2.0 Concept Interactive Next step in Virtual Communication You make STUFF! You engage students 24/7 - NOT YOU I-Tunes Example Can you imagine the possibilities if this resides on your student’s I-Pod or MP3 Player AND is updated everytime they plug in to download new music????????

Electronic Communication and the Digital World – Web 2.0 Some Popular Examples are: ◦ Face Book ◦ My Space ◦ Second Life ◦ I-Tunes ◦ Youtube ◦ Blogs ◦ Wikis ◦ Twitter ◦ Pod Casting ◦ RSS Feeds

Electronic Communication and the Digital World – Web 2.0 So What is the Big Deal? It is the communication and interactive world that is occurring with the Millennials Image communicating with your webpage via your cell phone Twitter / Home It is the future of communication “of and about education” If we don’t participate we will be left behind (No Educators Left)

Digital Divide Looking at the Digital Divide between Learners and Teachers

Electronic Communication and the Digital World – Web 2.0 Examples and Sites/Blogs This is a free site to create blogs This is a blogging site from one of my last classes This is a blog aggregator, collects and manages your Blogs

Electronic Communication and the Digital World – Web This is a site that allows the creation of free Wiki’s This is a link to Youtube This a Youtube type of site for educators Twitter Website

Here is a website that has a Directory of Hundreds of Web 2.0 Applications ALL are FREE Many are Blocked/Filtered Go2Web20.net - The Complete Web 2.0 sites directory Many Barriers CAN be removed or “workarounds” can be developed

Issues with Web 2.0 K – 12 Environment Balance of safe and secure websites with the need for change Teacher and student judgement / Examples Recent Research Can we afford not to change?

Filtering and the Need for Change 10/9/201521

Electronic Communication and the Digital World – Web 2.0 Why? Why Not? How?
