U4L2 – Global Awareness Learn the Terms Ingenuity gap Effective Governance Gender gap Labour standards The social, economic and political differences that separate men and women. Measures that protect workers and the environment. The gap between people’s need for the latest solution for age-old problems and their ability to provide for those solutions.. The security of human rights, through government, and institutions to protect them such as courts, police forces, etc.

Globalization has affected our awareness of issues through access to more information (ie: television, phone, internet) How has globalization has affected awareness of some of the following issues...

How had globalization affected awareness of issues such as the Ingenuity Gap? Canadians do not experience this gap to the extreme. Third world countries that have no stable government, no innovative ideas or quick solutions to problems are the ones that are still unable to resolve social issues, market failure, shortage of capital, etc.

How has global awareness affected gender issues? World Economic Forum on Global Gender Gaps Examines the relative position of women to men in 130 countries in four main areas: Economic participation and opportunity Educational attainment Political empowerment Health and survival. The rankings provide benchmarks which can be tracked from year to year to see how countries improve against past performance. No country in the world has achieved full equality for women, according to the report. Norway - topped the list at closing 82% of its gender gaps. In contrast, Yemen, at the bottom of the tablet, has closed only 45%. Half the Sky – movie video

How has globalization affected our awareness of labour standards and employment issues? Being aware of inequalities created by global trade has lead to organizations pushing for change. Fair Trade attempts to promote minimal labour standards

Assignment – Choose ONE 1. The gap between the world's rich and poor continues to grow. "Malnutrition, AIDS, conflict and illiteracy are a daily reality for millions. But it isn't chance or bad luck that keeps people trapped in this unrelenting poverty. It's man-made factors like a debt burden so great that it suffocates any chance of recovery and insufficient and ineffective aid." Visit the Make Poverty History and scroll to and view the video - Drop the Debt. Then browse their Take Action web site. Select a campaign that you would be interested in participating in. Identify the campaign that you selected (ie: who, what, where...) and describe what you selected to do about it.Make Poverty History Take Action OR Human rights violations can provoke ill health or can arise as a consequence of ill health. "Amnesty International campaigns on a whole spectrum of rights associated with health, from opposition to the death penalty and the denial of health care, to the right to safe drinking water and adequate nutrition. There is a role for everyone to play - get involved in our campaigns." Select a cause from the United Nations Cyber School Bus or Amnesty International site. On the AI site, scroll down to Appeals for Action and select a cause. Identify the Cause that you selected from either website, (ie: who, what, where...) and describe what you selected to do about it.Cyber School Bus International Or Select a story for the Good News column of the Amnesty International site. Summarize the highlights of one of the Good News stories. Be sure to identify which Good News story you have selected and include information such as who, what, when, where and why in your summary. Evaluation for the 'Take Action Assignment' will be based on the following criteria: - Identification and Outline of the Cause (who, what, when, where questions should be answered briefly adequately) - Length - 1/2 page - Mechanics (correct capitalization, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, etc.) Total - /20Amnesty International
