Christoph Waldmann Hank Loescher University of Bremen/MARUM NEON, USA Connecting Research Infrastructures in the Environmental Field Across the Atlantic COOPEUS-iCORDI Workshop, Helsinki,Oct 3,2014

COOPEUS Background Duration: 09/2012 – 08/2015 European Commission - FP7-INFRASTRUCTURES NSF SAVI SCOPE: Expand the transatlantic cooperation in regards to common data policies and data standards relevant to global research infrastructures in the environment field More information on COOPEUS-iCORDI Workshop, Helsinki,Oct 3,2014

COOPEUS aims to catalyze international collaboration among environmental research infrastructures: By easing data discovery and access through harmonization of data policies By promoting interoperability of Research Infrastructures on all levels (System, syntactic, structural and semantic interoperability) By improving data and information quality by defining the minimum requirements on work-flow descriptions and on QA/QC COOPEUS Goals COOPEUS-iCORDI Workshop, Helsinki,Oct 3,2014

1) Investigating commonalities and difference in the data policies to formulate minimum requirements for policy harmonization. 2) Interoperability of RIs will be investigated using User scenarios simulating RI collaborations monitoring an environmental hazards/event (e.g. Tsunami detection) 3) Highlight topics essential RI collaboration and interoperability to a broader audience at Conferences, Workshops and Meetings (e.g. PID-workshop, GEOSS Workshop, RI- harmonization workshop) Achieving the COOPEUS Goals COOPEUS-iCORDI Workshop, Helsinki,Oct 3,2014

COOPEUS Partners Involved environmental research infrastructures from EU and US: Eiscat (EU) – AMISR, SRI (US) Space Weather EMSO (EU) – OOI (US) Ocean observations Lifewatch (EU) -DataOne, NEON (US)Biodiversity EPOS (EU) – IRIS/UNAVCO (US) Solid Earth dynamics ICOS (EU) – NEON(US) Carbon observations COOPEUS-iCORDI Workshop, Helsinki,Oct 3,2014

COOPEUS make use of and collaborates with existing organizations/communities with a global vision for data distribution and availability such as ICSU-WDS and GEOSS COOPEUS collaborate with parallel running RI- integration projects such as EarthCUBE, ENVRI, iCORDI or ODIP. Link to GEOSS The GEOSS Components and Services Registry provides a formal listing and description of all the Earth observation systems, data sets, models and other services. The components and services listed on the Registry can be searched and explored. Integration of data and information GEOSS Common Infrastructure COOPEUS-iCORDI Workshop, Helsinki,Oct 3,2014

COOPEUS is based on a bottom-up approach - We build on existing mature infrastructures with experience in data collection, curation and distribution What does it take to integrate the services of the RIs involved in COOPEUS? COOPEUS – Hands on experience in integrating RIs Example: An application that integrates data between event data centers and observing stations across the globe including COOPEUS partners EarthScope and EPOS COOPEUS-iCORDI Workshop, Helsinki,Oct 3,2014
