+ Elements of Design LINE Line can be the linear marks made with a pen or brush tool or the edge created when two shapes meet. Direction Horizontal, Vertical or Oblique SHAPE A shape is a geometric figure. SIZE/SPACE Size is simply the relationship of the area occupied by one shape to that of another. TEXTURE Surface is- rough, smooth, soft, hard, glossy, etc. COLOUR Also called Hue TONE Tone is the lightness or darkness of a colour.

+ Principles of Design BALANCE – spread out; one area not over loaded GRADATION – from light to dark/dark to light REPETITION – too much of the same becomes monotonous CONTRAST – light/dark, horizontal/vertical HARMONY – similar and related elements (makes sense) DOMINANCE – used to give emphasis UNITY – visual linking (objects/areas are linked)
