Lesson 2-4 Solving Equations with Variables on Both Side August 14, 2014

Daily Learning Target I will solve equations with variables on both sides of the equal sign. I will identify equations that are identities or have no solutions.

Example 1 – w/ variables on both sides 5x + 2 = 2x + 14 x = 4

Example 2 – word problems It takes a graphic designer 1.5 hours to make one page of a web site. Using new software, the designer could complete each page in 1.25 hours, but it takes 8 hours to learn the software. How many web pages would the designer have to make in order to save time using the new software? Answer: 32 pages

Example 3 – w/ grouping symbols 2(5x – 1) = 3(x + 11) x = 5

Example 4 - Identity 10x + 12 = 2(5x + 6) x can be any number

Example 5 9m – 4 = -3m m There is no solution

Take Note Steps for solving equations: 1)Use the Distributive Property to remove any grouping symbols. Use properties of equality to clear decimals and fractions. 2)Combine like terms on each side of the equation. 3)Use the properties of equality to get the variable terms on one side of the equation and the constants on the other.

Take Note cont. 4) Use the properties of equality to solve for the variable. 5) Check you solution in the original equation.
