NGfL CYMRU GCaD What is a portrait? A portrait shows a person. It can be; a painting a drawing a photograph a sculpture or another artistic representation The face and its expression is the most important part of the work. The artist aims to show the likeness, personality and even the mood of the person. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer.This helps to connect the subject with the viewer. What do you think? Talk about this portrait with your partner.

NGfL CYMRU GCaD Looking for clues in a painting The way the painting is arranged by the artist is called the composition. Look closely at the painting. What can you see in the background? Where has the sitter been placed in the painting? Is the sitter to the side or in the centre? Why do you think the artist placed the sitter there?
