NGfL CYMRU GCaD What is a portrait? A portrait shows a person. It can be; a painting a drawing a photograph a sculpture or another artistic representation The face and its expression is the most important part of the work. The artist aims to show the likeness, personality and even the mood of the person. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer. This helps to connect the subject with the viewer. What do you think? Talk about this portrait with your partner.

NGfL CYMRU GCaD Looking for clues in a painting The way the painting is arranged by the artist is called the composition. Look closely at the painting. What can you see in the background? Where has the sitter been placed in the painting? Is the sitter to the side or in the centre? Why do you think the artist placed the sitter there?

NGfL CYMRU GCaD Plan Choose one member of your class/group to ‘sit’ for the portrait study. Think about…. The composition of your portrait study Where will your sitter be placed in the picture? What will you have in the background? Will you have any objects in the study? Will these objects have any special meaning? Task: Recreate the painting in your class Turn your classroom into an artist’s studio. Organise the materials you will need. Think about the seating.

NGfL CYMRU GCaD Develop Talk about your finished portrait studies. Comment on each other’s work. Use ‘Two Stars and Wish’ to help you. *Two things you like about the work. * One way to move forward with the work. How will you develop your 2D studies into 3D work? Challenge: Make a paper sculpture of your portrait study. What do you already know about working with paper and card?

NGfL CYMRU GCaD Finding out about Paper Sculpture Think about…… How can we change a 2D paper sheet into a 3D form? Helpful words: Crumple Tear Rip Fold Wrinkle Shred Crinkle Roll Now have a go! Change your A4 sheet of paper into a 3D form.

NGfL CYMRU GCaD FoldRoll

NGfL CYMRU GCaD What shapes can you make?

NGfL CYMRU GCaD Be Imaginative!

NGfL CYMRU GCaD You could….. Fill a brown envelope with scrunched paper. Make paper curls for hair. Could you make the features of the face 3D too? Experiment with folding and rolling the paper and card. Think about how you will join pieces. Would you choose glue or double sided tape? Why?

NGfL CYMRU GCaD Reflect Think about…. Something you did really well. Something you didn’t understand. Something you would change. Did the finished sculpture meet your aims? The next step…. Make a paper sculpture of a book character. Where will you locate the character? Can you make a setting for the character using a large box?
