Culture of wine As an enduring cultural symbol of European living, the role of wine has evolved over time, changing from an important source of nutrition to a cultural complement to food and conviviality compatible with a healthy lifestyle. The art of viticulture has also evolved, but one principle that has remained unchanged is the European tradition of presenting and communicating wine, which focuses on the origins, heritage and viniculture.

Wine therefore tends to be associated with gastronomy, history, local quality products and dignified social settings. As such, despite the differences in consumption patterns across the EU, moderate consumption remains the general norm and it is only a minority of people that misuse wine.

Famous winery US Winery Reviews California is the best known wine region in the United States, and one of the top wine regions of the world. In head to head blind tastings, the wines of Napa Valley often top the wines of France and other classic regions.

Santa Barbara Most people now know this region of California as the "Sideways Wine Region". It is located about 2 hours north of Los Angeles, right on the coast, and becomes deluged with tourists each weekend. This is where Miles and Jack waxed philosophical about the beauty of pinot noir.

Canadian Wine Reviews Niagara Ontario Wineries are world famous for their cabernet franc, late harvest and ice wine. Located at the same latitude as Northern California and central France, they are perfectly situated for fine wine growing. In the map of Canada below, you can see the Niagara region in dark blue on the very bottom right, nestled between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. The only other well known wine region in Canada is the Vancouver area, on the far lower left.

French Wine Reviews France maintains its world wide reputation for having some of the best wines on the planet. The regions of Bordeaux, Champagne, Burgundy, and others are recognized from China to South Africa. French winemakers have been growing grapes in these areas for hundreds of years, and even the Romans planted vineyards when they occupied the region.

Alcohol and Health In 2011, The Harvard Medical School published information on the Nature website that indicates drinking red wine can help extend your life. The effect seems very similar to the known effect of lessening the intake of calories. The fewer calories you eat, the longer you tend to live. The researchers believe a key component of wine - resveratrol - is responsible for this health gain.

Resveratrol in wine has already been shown in studies to help combat heart disease and cancer. Researchers feel it is this same effect that helps prolong life in general. The group is planning more studies to further explore how red wine works to help bring a longer life, and what rates of consumption are most optimal.

The researchers note that resveratrol seems to be produced in greater quantities when the grape vine is under stress, perhaps as a way of the plant helping itself to overcome current difficulties. This means that grapevines grown in regions where the vine has to struggle - such as in Chile, Argentina and Spain - container higher quantities of resveratrol than more gentle climates.
