Presentation transcript:

Personal Protective Equipment students wear approved safety goggles or safety glasses when in the lab. This is an absolute The following is acceptable! "MUST"! Not

Proper attire 1- floppy garments; avoid things that dangle. 2- long, loose hair styles for the same reason. 3- footware; so avoid sandals, thongs Avoid

Food and drink are NOT permitted in the lab! YOUR HEALTH IS IMPORTANT

or in Lab No EATING DRINKING

Avoid Horseplay In a laboratory setting, horseplay, even if good-natured, is.. absolutely unacceptable No pushing; no shoving Playing can be dangerous

WHAT NOT TO DO drink from lab equipment. NOT EVEN distilled water know what another person might have added to the "distilled water" jug DO NOTYou do not

Things to Do Before Lab Read the experimental procedure ahead of lab. An unprepared student is a danger to herself and TO OTHERS.

Broken Glass: DON'T throw broken glass into the waste basket. It Can Hurt You

DO use a special thick-walled container for broken glass. (If you don't happen to have one, an old milk carton is a good substitute.) A Simple Carton is OK

Laboratory Safety Equipment

First Aid Kit 1- It may save a life!!

Laboratory Safety Equipment 2-Fire Extinguisher Operation Every lab should have one

Laboratory Safety Equipment 2-Fire Extinguisher Operation USAGE: Twist the "KEY" to break the stiff Nylon retaining cord then pull "KEY" out Practice before, it may save your life!

Laboratory Safety Equipment Raise the nozzle in order to direct the stream of carbon dioxide 2-Fire Extinguisher Operation USAGE: Direct nozzle to right place

Laboratory Safety Equipment Squeeze the handle to begin operation. 2-Fire Extinguisher Operation USAGE: IT IS EASY TO USE

Laboratory Safety Equipment If you or a labmate is on fire..go (or direct her) to the entrance doorway to the lab. Find and pull the brass ring. Many gallons of water will be dumped from the shower on the ceiling to extinguish the blaze instantly. Safety Shower3-

Laboratory Safety Equipment If you get a chemical in your eye..wash it out immediately! Use the eyewash fountains (but run some water through before you wash your eye). Retract your eyelid (do not squint..it restricts water access). Afterward, go to the health center. Take your lab book so that the medical personnel can know with what you were working at the time of the accident. Fountain Eyewash 4-

Laboratory Safety Equipment Yank the blanket out of the wall holder. Wrap it around the victim to smother the fire. Fire Blanket 5-

Material Safety Data Sheets When a chemical is purchased, the supplier will send a MSDS sheet. The MSDS sheet lists the known dangers of the chemical in question. Your school should keep a file of MSDS sheets. Many people feel that the MSDS sheets overstate the dangers. Make sure you use the right MSDS sheet for the right chemical, as many chemical names sound similar. The catalogs of major suppliers also list useful safety information.

use a rubber bulb to create a vacuum When using pipets, suck the liquid into the pipet directly by mouth. Frequent mistakes, even with skilled lab workers, lead to the liquid reaching the mouth. Pipets DO NOT Do

For even more dangerous liquids, thick "nitrile" gloves should be used. These are very safe, but heavy and ungainly. Also, they become slick, when wet, and it is easy to drop things. cream-colored latex gloves (see photo) are no longer recommended. "Vinyl" gloves or "nitrile" gloves (often green or blue in color) are preferred. Handling of Acids or Bases BE Careful

Acid and Water DO NOT add WATER to CONCENTRATED ACID. The heat generated may cause splattering. DO add ACID to WATER instead of the reverse order of addition. The heat generated will be less, but splattering still may occur

TESTING of ODORS: If you absolutely must test the odor, carefully waft the vapor from the flask toward your nose with your hand. Keep the flask quite distant from your face. Do NOT smell the flask directly.

Bunsen Burner Usage 1-Make sure the rubber hoses are firmly attached. Both at the gas outlet2- and at the burner. Otherwise, the flame may "strike-back". Ask your teacher what3- this term means

Bunsen Burner Usage Turn up the gas flow until you hear a gentle flow of gas. Light the burner by bringing the match UP from the base toward the burner nozzle.

Bunsen Burner Usage The match should be quenched with water, NOT thrown into the waste directly. Fires may occur.

Proper Heating Of Glass Tubing Or Rods Proper heating of glass tubing or glass rods in order to bend it: Remember NOT to hand the red-hot glass rod to another person, especially the teacher. Beware of the Flame!!

Heating Of Test Tubes A better technique: Make sure that reaction tubes, e.g. test tubes, are not directed toward yourself or other persons. The chemicals may splatter out the tube. Keep away from fume

Use of the FUME HOOD the HOOD for reactions that give off vapors, especially smelly vapors. The draft of the HOOD will sweep away vapors so that the lab itself maintains reasonable air quality.

At the End of the lab period: Exit the lab in an orderly manner. running, no pushing, no shovingAgain: no
